Description
The newly formed Bioethanol Science and Technology Center (CTBE) in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, is looking for senior and junior dynamic researchers, to constitute its core research staff and to develop the following areas of investigation:

• systematic studies of pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse for enzymatic hydrolysis;
• development of enzymes tailored for conversion of sugarcane cellulosic raw materials into fermentable sugars;
• development of enzymatic hydrolysis processes of sugarcane bagasse;
• development of micro-organisms for fermentation of pentoses;
• other deconstruction processes of sugarcane bagasse and leaves into fermentable sugars;
• new strategies for physical, chemical, and biological transformations of sugars into ethanol;
• other strategies for sugarcane cellulosic ethanol production;
• investigations of fundamental sugarcane photosynthetic and other solar to chemical energy conversion processes;
• studies of sustainability of large scale sugar cane and bioethanol production in Brazil: technical, environmental, and socio-economic aspects.

We require:

• post-doctoral level of education in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, physics, chemical and materials engineering, and other related fields.

CTBE is being established near the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in the campus of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS), with funds from the Ministry of Science and Technology and other sources. Its strategic objective is “To contribute to ensure Brazilian leadership in the sustainable production of bioethanol from sugarcane through state-of-the-art research, development, and innovation”. It will cooperate with Universities, research organizations, and private companies in order to achieve this objective.

Among the facilities under development at the Center is a Pilot Plant for Process Development, which will include bagasse pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation, and distillation laboratories, supported by the necessary analytical instrumentation.

The Center will be a very lively research environment, closely linked to industry, with a wide-ranging training program for undergraduate and graduate students and with an important visiting researchers program. The location of the Center gives it easy access to all the research infrastructure of LNLS – synchrotron light source, structural molecular biology, and nanotechnology laboratories -, as well as to UNICAMP facilities, faculty, and students. The Center is a national facility, also open to researchers, engineers, and technical personnel from any institution or company acting in Brazil.

Initially all positions are for a five year period, but they can be renewed indefinitely for successful candidates. Visiting short or long term positions for senior candidates can be negotiated. Positions are available from October 2008 until all vacancies are filled.
