Description

Research Intern - Community Renewables

Are you interested in a Research internship with Forum for the Future?

Forum for the Future is now recruiting a German-speaking Research Intern to be based in London to work on a new project that will build a vision for the role of communities in developing renewable energy in the UK. This project will enable the UK to learn from the experience of Germany and include arranging a tour of the country. Therefore, experience of Germany and fluency in German are essential.

Forum works in partnership with leading organisations in business and the public sector, focusing on key sectors including food, energy and finance. During your internship you will work closely with the team to support their information needs and conduct research on the project.
The internship will involve working with colleagues at Carbon Leapfrog who are delivering the project with the Forum. There will be opportunities to work in their office as well as ours. The specific research tasks of the project that your research will support are to address the following questions:

  • Role of Community Energy – given what is known about the accessible resource and various limitations, what role can community-scale projects play in a coherent decentralised energy system / low carbon economy in the UK?
  • Can provision for safe, affordable energy at a constant / fair price be made through community renewable energy while creating jobs, investment opportunities and income streams? This will be largely based on analysis of existing literature with potential for some interviews or data analysis as well.

You will also be:

  • Supporting the team by searching for and contacting potential places and organisations to visit in the Germany tour and creating case studies and collating information on them for publication
  • Researching potential stakeholders for the project including attendees to a high-profile event to be held in December in the UK which you will help produce and attend.

Collaboratively produced outputs of written online summary reports and case study summaries and will cover:

  • an analysis of how decentralised and community renewable energy has been catalysed and delivered in Germany
  • the associated benefits to the economy and communities
  • how such an approach could be applied / replicated in the UK, based on relevant case studies and policies

These outputs will be used as information sources for the builiding of a vision for the role of community renewables in the UK and an action plan to implement this vision.

Job Summary
Research tasks will centre around community owned renewables especially in Germany and the UK
Other responsibilities will include:

  • Administrative support, such as helping to organise travel for the project and the celebration event in December.
