Description

The Richard Sandbrook Trust is a recently established charity set up in memory of a former Chair of Forum for the Future Trustee board.   His family, close friends and colleagues are all involved.

We are looking for an intern for six months to undertake some tasks for us that, for the right person, might meet criteria for a paper, article, or even a masters dissertation.  The outcome will be the assembly and organisation of documents and witness accounts about Richard, his view on life, and his achievements.  This will help the Trustees sustain his memory and promote his way of tackling the problems caused by so many years of unsustainable development.

Richard Sandbrook was a pioneer at the start of the modern green movement, and the project will give you the opportunity to meet and interview many of the people who founded the UK environmental movement, and have given leadership subsequently – in many different sectors.

JOB DESCRIPTION
You will report to Sara Parkin, Chair of the RST who will steer you to people and places (including his family).  You will have a base in Forum for the Future’s offices in London, and the support of Sara’s PA, but access to your own laptop will be necessary for working out of the office. Self-reliance and motivation will be important.

What we want you to achieve:

  1. To have gathered papers and witness accounts that chronicle Richard’s life and achievements
  2. To have organised these in a way that makes them accessible to others, with a primary focus on a web-based library   (The web-site exists, is hosted by the Eden Project in Cornwall where technical support will be provides for populating the site)
  3. To have written a chronology of his life – a short version for the web-site a longer version, referenced, that could form the basis of a biography.  This chronology to be linked to the chronology of the green movement.

Achieving these outcomes will involve physical and telephone meetings and interviews, many in London, but some travel in the UK may be necessary. The working days and hours are to be agreed.   Reasonable (and pre-agreed) expenses will be covered.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
We are looking for someone with the following attributes:

  • An interest in and commitment to sustainable development
  • A commitment to the values and mission of Forum for the Future (where you will be based)
  • A commitment to the objectives of the Richard Sandbrook Trust (for which you will be working)
  • Good ICT skills
  • Good organisational skills and ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to follow instructions and be self-motivating
  • Ability to work in a team environment

TIMETABLE
This internship is for 6 months, and if you are selected, you will work with Sara Parkin to design a timetable for actions and achievements, and have the opportunity to report to the RST Trustees from time to time.

Closing Date: 9.00 am 22nd July
Interview Date: afternoon of 29th July
Start Date: early September 2010
