Position Title: Research Fellow – Western Lands Conservation

Position Location: Portland, OR

Position Description: Pinchot Institute Research Fellows provide timely, objective research, policy analysis, education and technical assistance to policymakers and natural resource management organizations in the public, private and nonprofit sectors, at levels ranging from national to international to local communities. Research Fellows collaborate with other researchers and policy specialists within and outside the Pinchot Institute to identify, develop, and test new policies and business models for solving the complex conservation challenges of the 21st century.

Partnering with a variety of organizations, the Institute is testing new approaches to financing the conservation and restoration of Western lands and natural resources. Working closely with the Institute’s Western Regional Director, the primary near-term focus of this Research Fellow will be the deployment of a regional forest carbon incentive program aimed at conserving the family forests of the Pacific Northwest.

This Research Fellow will coordinate the activities of a variety of partners across Oregon and Washington, with tasks including:

  • assessing candidate landowners’ conservation opportunities,
  • overseeing the strategic allocation of Federal conservation funds to priority landowners and the work of technical service providers interfacing directly with family forest landowners,
  • advancing a programmatic communications strategy with a diverse group of public and private entities,
  • monitoring and reporting programmatic accomplishments, and
  • identifying new opportunities.

Other near-term programmatic priorities of the Western Regional Office include development of:

  • financial models for accelerating the pace and scope of restoration forestry and climate adaptation,
  • incentives for sustainable forest management, and
  • policy options for working lands conservation.

Desired Qualifications: We are seeking applicants with outstanding academic records, excellent organizational and time management skills, advanced interpersonal communication abilities, and the ability to write clearly and concisely. Experience in conservation finance, ecosystem markets market-based incentives, and western conservation issues are all desired attributes. Candidates should have a master’s degree in natural resources or environmental management, or a related field. Current graduate students in these fields who can work full-time are also welcome to apply.

Compensation and benefits:
Research Fellowships are a one-year appointment renewable after a year. Salary is competitive. Benefits include a collegial working environment, 10 days of annual leave, federal holidays, family medical leave, health insurance, and other benefits.

Application details: Please send a cover letter describing your background and interest in the Research Fellow position, along with a current resume, writing sample, and the names of three references (please include email addresses and telephone numbers). Applications should be sent in PDF or Microsoft Word format to jobs@pinchot.org. Applications due by 5pm PST, Monday, March 9, 2015.
