The Research Fellow will work within the Forests and Governance Programme, responsible to the Programme Director and directly supervised by a Principal Scientist.
Duties and responsibilities
- Scientific coordination of research on REDD project sites in Brazil (70%)The Research Fellow will have overall responsibility for Component 2 research in Brazil. The tasks will include:
- Coordinate field research activities in Brazil
- Conduct training of enumerators and encoder
- Assure accuracy, quality and timeliness in the delivery of data from the field to the encoder
- Be responsible for analysis, reports, and scientific writings coming out of the work in Brazil
- Contribute to the overall design of Component 2 field research (20%)The Research Fellow will assist in conceptualising and designing appropriate research instruments, including:
- Participate in meetings and discussions on GCS-REDD research design
- Oversee the pretesting of research instruments
- Create elements of design that are specific to the Brazil model of REDD
- Participate in the overall management and coordination of GCS-REDD, component 2 (10%) The Research Fellow will be involved in the general management and coordination of component 2 of the GCS-REDD. The tasks will include:
- Liaise with research partners, project proponents and government institutions
- Help organise major events, such as workshops and conferences
- Assist in preparing project related documents and presentations
- Assist in other tasks as needed.
Requirements
- Education, experience, technical skills and competencies
- PhD in the social sciences
- Knowledge of REDD, governance and the political economy of land use and deforestation
- Experience in supervision of junior scientists
- Experience in project management and partner liaison
- Fluency in English and Portuguese
- Good writing skills
- Personal attributes and competencies
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with people in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment
- Have initiative and capable of working independently
- Be an effective team player
- Competency in personal organisation, priority setting, and managing multiple tasks.

- CIFOR offers a competitive remuneration commensurate with skills and experience.
- The initial appointment will be for two years starting as soon as possible and including the standard 6-month probationary period), with a possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the position and available resources.
- The duty station will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Extended travel and stays at other locations will be required.
