Description

The Asia Centre of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) seeks a mid-level researcher to contribute to a growing research cluster on gender, environment and development in the Asia-Pacific region. Led by Dr. Bernadette P. Resurrección, the group is actively engaged in research, capacity building and advisory services in environment and development policy contexts, utilizing gender and social analytical tools and perspectives.

We are specifically seeking a social scientist who can apply gender analytical tools and gender mainstreaming approaches related to technical aspects of environment and development – climate change and disasters, water, energy, land, forests, ecosystems, food – within the region. We are particularly interested in complementing our existing capacities by bringing in a new recruit with significant inter-disciplinary experience in gender mainstreaming technical environment programs and projects. The candidate will have a background in any or some of the following inter-disciplinary fields or their respective cognates: geography, gender and development, development studies, rural/urban development, environmental studies, agronomy, science, technology and society studies, and the water sciences.

Research Fellows at SEI’s Asia Centre bring expertise in a relevant academic field. They initiate and lead creative and strategic research, and produce high-quality analytical output. They have a capacity to work in a multi-disciplinary team, in policy environments, and with overseas partners. They usually hold a PhD. However, we also accept Research Fellows with a Master’s degree and research abilities and experience equivalent to that of a PhD. Over time, Research Fellows are expected to maintain a high level of self-funding, either individually or as part of teams. They must also maintain a good publication record, and for this position we are looking for candidates who have already established a good publication record.

Essential Criteria

  • Ph.D or Master’s Degree equivalent in experience  (geography, development studies, gender and development studies, agronomy, water sciences, environmental studies, science, technology and society studies);
  • Excellent knowledge and familiarity with gender, environment and development as a field (theory, research, development practice, policy and programming)
  • Very good experience in gender mainstreaming and managing development projects and programs in state, non-state and/or trans-boundary organizations
  • Excellent knowledge of gender, environment and development issues in the Asia-Pacific region, and of networks working on similar concerns
  • Strong experience in fund-raising individually or in a team
  • Very good experience in capacity building and organizing capacity building materials
  • Good publication record
  • Excellent English language skills

Desirable Criteria

  • Engagement in a variety of public forums: conferences, workshops, dialogues, roundtable discussions
  • Experience in integrating gender with geo-spatial technologies, engineering, natural resource management and other technical fields of specialization (preferred but not necessary)
  • Knowledge of at least one regional language
