 Research Contracts Supervisor

Based at Wallingford, Oxfordshire

The Research Contracts & Licensing Team sits within the Research & Innovation Services Section based at CEH's Wallingford site. The Team provides a data licensing service, both in and out of the organisation supporting CEH’s Science Areas, wider academic research and commercial exploitation. Dealing with in excess of 700 enquiries a year, the Team also manages a growing roster of licence agreements, from receipt of initial enquiry, through drafting and issuing of licences, receipt of income, calculating CEH’s royalty obligations and on to licence renewal.

Alongside the Team’s established data licensing service, we are now setting up an in-house research contracts service to support the work of CEH scientists, providing a contract negotiation, drafting and advisory service and, as a result, there is a requirement for a Research Contracts Supervisor.  This is a new position within CEH supporting the generation of an increased amount of external financial income and responding to an increasingly complex contracting environment with both public and private sector bodies.

Main duties

  • Draft and finalise research contracts and other agreements in a timely manner;
  • Provide specialist support for CEH staff on all aspects of contracts and contracts management;
  • Advise on contractual issues, including intellectual property rights, to both internal staff and external stakeholders;
  • Ensure that CEH’s project contracts enable future use of project results, both for future scientific research and, where appropriate, for commercial exploitation;
  • Manage the implementation of required contract management systems and transition from pre-existing systems (under the direction of the Research Contracts Manager);
  • Contribute to in-house training sessions at individual CEH sites and to the preparation of training materials.

Skills Required

  • A degree in a relevant discipline or relevant professional qualifications is desirable;
  • Significant work experience within a contracts environment;
  • Proven ability in drafting and negotiating project contracts, including consortia and sub-contracts, Framework Agreements, Memoranda of Understanding and Material Transfer Agreements;
  • Good knowledge of intellectual property issues and ability to provide clear advice on copyright and other areas of IPR;
  • Good interpersonal skills and able to work effectively as part of a team in order  to establish close working relationships with scientists and non-scientists alike at all levels;
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral);
  • Good attention to detail and able to provide high quality data/information;
  • Excellent level of numerical ability and proven computer skills, including the use of Excel, a good knowledge of relevant contract management software and ideally Inteum;
  • Up to date with current thinking including legal frameworks and Government policy;
  • Able to manage a busy workload, prioritising own work and projects to meet deadlines.
