Research Contracts Manager

Based in Wallingford – Band 5

Salary band £31,330 - £37,875

The Research Contracts & Licensing Team sits within Research & Innovation Services based at the headquarters of CEH at Wallingford.  

As team leader for the research contracts service the Research Contracts Manager’s role will be to:

  • Manage the research contracts management capability and associated information systems, identifying opportunities for potential process improvement, under the direction of Head of Research Contracts & Licensing;
  • Manage the negotiation and arrangement of CEH’s portfolio of research contracts in part through the direct line management of the two Research Contracts Administrators;
  • Minimise and secure appropriate contractual risk; negotiate and conclude complex research contracts and consortia agreements, associated sub-contracts and other agreements in a timely manner
  • Provide specialist support and advice for CEH staff and stakeholders on all aspects of contracts and contracts management, including intellectual property rights;

Skills Required

  • A good degree or equivalent qualification;
  • Significant proven ability, through demonstrable and substantive successful experience:
    • as a Contracts Manager in a research-intensive organisation;
    • to successfully manage a Contracts Team;
    • to successfully take responsibility for negotiating and managing a large portfolio of contracts, ideally research based, at any one time, with a proven track record of success in bringing negotiations to timely conclusions, drafting and negotiating research contracts, including consortia and sub-contracts, Framework Agreements, Memoranda of Understanding and Material Transfer Agreements;
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills (written and oral) with a proven ability to establish close, long-term, mutually rewarding working relationships with CEH’s researchers and external stakeholders at all levels;
    • Excellent prioritisation and organisational skills;
    • Experience and appreciation of knowledge exchange activities and commercialisation of intellectual property;
    • Good knowledge of relevant contract management software and ideally Inteum;
