The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage 13 research personnel viz., 02-Senior Research Fellows, 05-Junior Research Fellows, 04-Research Biologists and 02-Project Assistants (Indian national only) through a walk-in-interview on Monday, 22nd July 2013. Project Title, details of position and duration

Long term monitoring of tigers, co-predators & prey species in Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve and adjoining landscapes, Maharashtra, India.
 (01 –Senior Research Fellow)

Duration: 05 Years

Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Zoology/Life Science/Botany/Forestry/Environmental Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University with minimum of two year’s research experience.

Desirable Qualification

  • Demonstrate a liking and passion for wildlife research and conservation.
  • Experienced in basic wildlife field techniques (study design, sign surveys, line transects, vegetation sampling, camera trapping, occupancy etc.)
  • Conversant with data analysis, ecological & statistical software (abundance estimation, mark recapture, DISTANCE, MARK, PRESENCE)
  • Demonstrate ability to work in the field under harsh conditions.

Description of Work

Studying tigers and co-predators through radio telemetry; tigers and co-predators population estimation and monitoring; prey population estimation and monitoring; habitat use estimation; predation and human-animal conflict evaluation. The researchers are required to conduct field work to collect relevant data to address the varied aspects of the study.

Economics of living in the wild: cost benefit analysis for the forest corridor linking the Rajaji National Park and the Corbett Tiger Reserve.

Evaluation of MHC Hetrozygosity in Isolated Tiger Population.

Masters Degree in Life Sciences (Biotechnology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology etc.) with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University with minimum of two year’s research experience.

Desirable Qualification

Candidates should have working knowledge of modern genetics/molecular biology lab experiments and experience in field work to collect biological samples.

Description of Work

To study the MHC variation between isolated verses connected tiger population. The researcher is expected to be highly motivated and have the ability to work in harsh environment involving biological sampling from field.

Monitoring land use by wildlife, livestock and humans in Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve.
(01 – Junior Research Fellow)

Duration: Three year (Up to May 2014).

Masters’ Degree in Wildlife Biology/ Zoology / Forestry / Botany with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Field research experience in the field of wildlife biology / sociology or park-people interface aspects / GIS. Ability to speak and understand Nepali language would be of advantage.

Candidates with strong physical and mental abilities and a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of the Sikkim Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support may apply.

Description of Work

This project aims to develop a spatial database on the land use patterns by wildlife, livestock and humans in Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve and develop a programme for monitoring the use of wildlife, livestock and humans in Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve. This project involves extensive and field work in the remote, rugged, high altitude regions of Sikkim Himalayan region and also extensive lab work related to dietary analysis, molecular genetic studies, and computer based modeling analysis.

Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
(01 – Project Assistant)

Duration: Three months.

Desirable Qualification

  1. Candidate with knowledge of Geo-informatics will be preferred.
  2. Skills in the design, development and management of computer databases.
  3. Experience in documentation and publication.

Description of Work

This component of IPBES project focuses on Data Management and Web Portal Development which includes i) Continued data capture and data management in WII data base and ii) Enrichment of data, data management flow and development of web-portal for different data types including images, geospatial occurrence data, species informative data etc.

Establishment of Knowledge Management System for East Godavari River Estuarine Ecosystem, Andhra Pradesh.

JRF–Aquatic Component: Masters’ Degree in Botany/Zoology/Forestry/ Statistics/ Life Science/Experimental Biology/Environmental Sciences/Biological Sciences/Wildlife Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

JRF–Aquatic Component: Candidates with specialization in Marine biology, fisheries sciences, aquatic biology will be preferred. Field experience related to marine fauna will be an advantage. Experience in fish population assessment, habitat assessment and water quality studies. Good quantitative skills including statistical methods and modeling. Skills in the design, development and management of computer databases.

Essential Qualification

JRF–Terrestrial Component: Masters’ Degree in Botany/Zoology/Forestry/Statistics/ Life Science/Experimental Biology/Environmental Sciences/ Biological Sciences/Wildlife Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

JRF–Terrestrial Component: Some research and/or field experience related to coastal ecosystem will be an advantage. Knowledge in ecological modelling, statistical, spatial analysis software(s) (R and ArcGIS) and computer programming language (Python).

Essential Qualification

JRF–GIS Component: Masters’ Degree in Botany/Zoology/Forestry/Statistics/Life Science/Experimental Biology/Environmental Sciences/ Biological Sciences/Wildlife Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

JRF–GIS Component: Candidates with PG Diploma Degree/Certificate in Remote Sensing and GIS, Geo-informatics will be preferred. Experience in remote sensing and GIS based image interpretation and analysis using ERDAS Imagine and ArcGIS software.

Description of Work

Project active ities include 1. Ecological assessment of terrestrial/aquatic flora and fauna in the study site, 2. Assessment of coastal ecosystem vulnerability to climate change so as to contribute in formulation of appropriate mitigation/conservation strategies, 3. Satellite data preparation – Mosaicing of georectified satellite data of different time frames, 4. Preparation of land use / Land cover (LULC) maps for different period at 1:50,000 scale, 5. Generation of spatial layers at various scales and 6. Dissemination of information through workshops and publications.

Some specific activities envisaged for the selected candidates are: a. carry out field data collection, data analysis, synthesis, and report writing, b. carry out specific tasks/ activities relevant to project components assigned and submit periodic reports on such tasks, c.contribute and participate in planning/organization/conduct of field level training workshops, and stakeholder meetings, d. carry out any other work related to the project assigned by the project investigators and e. Should be prepared to travel quite extensively and work in the remote field conditions for longer duration.

Candidates having field experience in conducting ecological research and monitoring will be given preference.

Description of Work

The research fellow is expected to work in Tiger Reserves in helping implement MSTrIPES (Monitoring System for Tigers: Intensive Patrolling and Ecological Status) in collaboration with the forest departments. The program MSTrIPES involves generating GPS based patrolling data for protecting tigers and their habitat and regular ecological status monitoring using camera traps, transect surveys, track plots and occupancy surveys. This information is then to be analysed in a software system dedicated for this purpose to generate periodic reports to assist management and protection of Tiger Reserves.

Assessment of ecological settings and biodiversity values of Papikonda National Park and Indira Sagar (Polavaram) Multipurpose Project areas impact zone in Andhra Pradesh for development of mitigatory measures.
(01 – Project Assistant)

Duration: Six Months

Desirable Qualification

Experience in terrestrial fauna and assessment. Candidate should also have experience in analysis and synthesis of research materials.

Description of Work

The study aims to assess the impact of hydro project on both aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity. The Project Assistant will conduct extensive field works in and around the impact zone of proposed Indira Sagar (Polavaram) Multipurpose Irrigation Project in Andhra Pradesh.
