Uni Climate is a department of Uni Research AS and partner of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), a collaboration between Uni Research, University of Bergen, Institute of Marine Research and the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center.

BCCR has a significant international profile in terms of research, funding, personnel and publications.

In addition to engaging in basic research in the areas of global and regional climate dynamics, paleoclimate, oceanography and biogeosciences, Uni Climate is now expanding its activities into the areas of regional climate modeling and climate information services. We have an energetic core of young researchers with a wide range of interests and we seek a research associate to complement our strengths and support our growth in exciting new directions.

This Research Associate will provide expertise in regional climate modeling, analysis and data handling in fulfilling the following primary duties and responsibilities:
 - Maintain BCCR’s suite of WRF-based regional climate modeling tools (WRF, WRF-Hydro, COAWST/polar-COAWST). This includes keeping the models updated, experimenting with set-up options for specific research applications, resolutions and domains and maintaining metadata and documentation. There is substantial opportunity within these tasks to engage in process-based or other research agendas if desired
 - Design, test and perform model simulations in support of research projects and climate services applications
 - Develop and implement an online data portal/information gateway, according to international standards, where climate information will be accessed by project partners, national agencies, and both private and public user communities
 - Maintain our data archive of model simulations and analyses on both local and national servers and ensure that storage requirements are met
 - Actively coordinate with BCCR’s partners in the Norwegian Climate Service Center to ensure that the national climate information needs are being met
 - Ensure timely and accurate product deliveries to project partners and clients
 - Coordinate with data providers and other Norwegian partners in the national climate service center
 - Make presentations at appropriate scientific venues as
 requested or needed
 - Actively contribute to research, analysis and manuscript preparation
 - The holder of this position is also encouraged to collaborate with BCCR and international colleagues, participate in grant proposals and pursue her/his research interests

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in meteorology, atmospheric or environmental sciences, computer sciences, mathematics, physics, engineering or related Earth sciences field with experience in scientific programming, analysis and/or relevant research. Alternatively or a Master’s degree in one of the above fields with at least 3 years experience in scientific programming, analysis and/or relevant research.

Experience with regional climate models, high performance computing and handling of large data sets is essential. Experience with WRF is advantageous. Familiarity with data formats commonly used in the climate science community (e.g. NetCDF, HDF) is highly desirable as is familiarity with the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) system of gateways and data nodes.

Demonstrated experience in developing and working with computer codes and applications using FORTRAN, C, C++, Python, shell scripting, etc. in an Unix environment is required.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and solid interpersonal skills with a demonstrated publication record is a requirement. The applicant must have the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines and must be able to work independently as well as make positive team contributions.
