W A L K – I N – I N T E R V I E W

to engage Research Fellows

 

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage 01-Research Associate; 07-Project Biologists and 01-Project Sociologist (Indian national only) through a walk-in-interview on Friday, 31st May 2013. The details of the available positions along with essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below:

 

Project Title, Details of Positions, Project Background, and Duration

Execution of Implementation Plan - Kailash Sacred Landscape Conservation and Development Initiative (KSLCDI)

 

Positions: (01- Research Associate;  07- Project Biologists; and 01- Project Sociologist)

 

Duration: Total duration of the programme is of five years (2012-2016). However, above mentioned research personnel would be initially engaged for 10 months or upto December, 2013 whichever is earlier. All these positions or some of them are extendable/ renewable beyond December, 2013 until 2016 on an annual basis depending upon performance and requirement of the project.

 

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Kathmandu, Nepal has taken a lead in demonstrating the concept of Transboundary Landscape Management in Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region. Seven transboundary landscapes have been identified. One of them is the “Kailash Sacred Landscape (KSL)”. ICIMOD is currently in the process of executing an Implementation Plan (KSLCDI) on the Indian side of this transboundary landscape in collaboration with select national and state level organizations.  The Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehra Dun is one of the partner Institutions and mainly aims to contribute towards project components on ‘Ecosystem management’, ‘Comprehensive Environmental Monitoring’, and ‘Regional Cooperation’ in collaboration with other participating national/state level organizations.

 

The KSLCDI has the following broad objectives:

  • Strengthen transboundary regional cooperation by institutionalizing the elements of the regional cooperation framework.

  • Mainstream sustainable ecosystem management approaches and practices at all levels mainstreamed into national policies and plans in the context of climate change in the KSL.

  • Build the capacity of key institutions for long-term environmental monitoring and socioeconomic research for better planning and decision-making.

  • Contribute to establishment of a regional knowledge sharing platform to support evidence-based decision making at regional and national levels.  

 

Essential Qualifications

RA (01): Ph.D. Degree in Zoology/ Life Science/ Botany/ Wildlife Science/ Environmental Science/ Forestry/ Biological Science/ Life science/ Social sciences so far as it is relevant to studies in human dimensions aspect of wildlife management from a recognized University.

 

Project Biologist (07): Masters’ Degree in Zoology/ Botany/ Life Science/ Wildlife Science/ Forestry/ Environmental Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

 

Project Sociologist (01): Masters’ Degree in Social Sciences relevant to studies in human dimensions aspect of wildlife conservation with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Research Associate:

  • Candidates with strong physical and mental abilities. Having a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of Uttarakhand Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support. Demonstrate ability to work in the field under harsh conditions.

  • Demonstrate a passion for wildlife research and field conservation.

  • Have published research work to his/her credit in reputed peer reviewed journals and have already shown evidence of independent  research work.

  • Experience of participation and organization of scientific conferences/ workshops/ meetings.

  • Field research experience relevant to wildlife science/ high altitude ecology/ landscape approach to conservation/ social sciences relevant to human dimension of wildlife conservation.

  • Experience in basic wildlife field techniques and well conversant with data analysis, ecological & statistical software.


Project Biologist/ Sociologist:

  • Seven positions of Project Biologists are meant for one candidate in each category of specialization i.e. vegetation, mammals (carnivores and ungulates), birds, herpetofauna, fishes, and insects

  • Candidates having interest/ experience on carrying out research studies relevant to above specializations -vegetation/faunal groups.

  • Candidates with strong physical and mental abilities. Having a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of Uttarakhand Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support. Demonstrate ability to work in the field under harsh conditions.

  • Demonstrate a passion for wildlife research and conservation.

  • Experience in basic wildlife field techniques (study design, sign surveys, line transects, sampling, camera trapping, etc.) and conversant with data analysis, ecological and statistical software.

  • Have relevant research experience and published research papers to his/ her credit.

  • Experience of participation in scientific conferences/ workshops/ meetings.

  • Field research experience relevant to wildlife science/ high altitude ecology/ landscape approach to conservation/ social sciences relevant to human dimension of wildlife conservation.

Description of Work

  • Project  activities  include assessment of ecosystem vulnerability at landscape level; valuation of key ecosystem services at pilot sites; capacity building of CBOs in participatory ecosystem / natural resource management, planning and plan implementation; Support to CBOs for specific activities including fodder development, eco-restoration of degraded sites; Implementation of Comprehensive Environmental Monitoring Plan (CEMP);  Participatory management of buffer zones, critical habitats, and corridors and mitigation of human-wildlife conflicts; Support to networking; Policy review and harmonization; Local awareness raising and indigenous knowledge development; Contribution to policy analysis documents; Learning and dissemination workshops; and Publications.

  • Team of research personnel -RA, Biologists and Sociologist would thus undertake assessment on floral and faunal diversity (mammals, birds, herpetofauna, fishes, and insects) in natural ecosystems and agro ecosystem so as to develop a better understanding on ecological inter-relationships, impact of traditional resource dependence and developmental projects, and ecosystem vulnerability so as to contribute in formulation of appropriate conservation strategies. Team is also expected to participate in field monitoring programme based on CEMP.

  • Team members would contribute and participate in planning/ organization/ conduct of field level training workshops, and stakeholder meetings.

 

Specific activities envisaged for each category of research personnel are as follows:

 

Research Associate:

 

He/she will be responsible to carry out specific tasks/ activities relevant to Project Components assigned to him/her and submit periodic reports on such tasks.

 

He/ she will be responsible for coordination at hqrs and also in field with fellow research personnel, participating supervisors, collaborators, and stakeholders.

 

Assist fellow researchers in Orientation, field data collection, data analysis, synthesis, and report writing.

 

Assist Task Supervisors/ Project Coordinator/ Nodal officer in conduct of meetings, field training, workshops and conferences as envisaged in the project. 

 

Prepare scientific papers, project reports, presentations and dissemination material/ project related outreach activities.

 

Assist in record keeping, assimilation of project information, and database management.

 

Any other assignment by Project Authorities.

 

 

Project Biologist/Project Sociologist:

 

He/she will be responsible to carry out specific tasks/ activities relevant to Project Components assigned to him/her and submit periodic reports on such tasks.

 

Field data collection, data analysis, synthesis, and report writing.

 

Assist Task Supervisors/ Project Coordinator/ Nodal officer in conduct of meetings, field training, workshops and conferences as envisaged in the project. 

 

Prepare scientific papers, reports and presentations and dissemination material / project related outreach activities.

 

Any other assignment by Project Authorities.

GENERALTERMS & CONDITIONS

  1. Candidate for the position of Research Associate (RA) should be below 40 years of age as on Monday, 27th May 2013 and the upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years for candidates belonging to SC/ST. Age of the candidate shall not be more than 28 years for the advertised position of Project Biologist/ Project Sociologist as on Monday, 27th May 2013. Upper age limit for Project Biologist/Project Sociologist may be relaxed up to 5 years, as in case of candidates  belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and physically handicapped categories.

  2. The selected candidate for the position of Research Associate (RA-I) will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 22,000/- per month. The fellowship amount for the selected Project Biologist/Project Sociologist is Rs. 12,000/- consolidated per month.

  3. Selected candidate(s) will be engaged initially up to 31st December 2013, however the tenure may be extended depending upon the exigencies of work at sole discretion of the Institute and satisfactory performance of the candidate.

  4. Candidate(s) may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.

  5. The selection of the candidate(s) will be based on Walk-in-Interview to be held onFriday, 31st May 2013 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. The registration will begin by 09:00 A.M. onwards.

  6. Canvassing in any form is liable to rejection of the candidature.

  7. Candidate(s) should bring the duly filled-in applications with attested true copies of testimonials of educational qualifications, research experience, extracurricular activities, date of birth etc., along with copies of mark sheets of all examinationsAll original documents should be produced at the time of registration.

  8. One way travel expenses will be paid to the candidate, selected for the project. The expense will be limited to actual 2nd class rail/bus fare by the shortest route from his/her place of stay/residence.
