Research Associate: Land Surface Modeller – IRC183793

NERC – Centre for Ecology and Hydrology – OX10 8BB

Salary: £28,200 - £30,600, Fixed Term for 3 years, Full Time

We are offering a comprehensive 3-year Research Associate traineeship during which you will work in an active, research-focused team based at our Wallingford site. The aim of the research is to better understand the role of the land surface on climate, with an emphasis on the role of vegetation, working on projects that include understanding vegetation response to seasonal temperature and soil moisture stress in South America, studying high-temperature stomatal controls in the JULES model in Africa and studying vegetation responses to climate change in the UK.

   

Skills and qualifications required on appointment

  • Have a 2.1 Degree in either physical or biological sciences, plus a PhD in a science degree, or at least a Masters degree with relevant experience
  • Have some experience of programming with a preference for someone who has experience of using large datasets
  • Possess good written and oral communication skills
  • Have good team working skills and be able to demonstrate the ability to develop effective internal and external collaborations within the scientific area
  • Have good organisational and time management skills, with an ability to work independently and to deadlines
  • Ability to work overseas if required

Training and skills you will acquire

  • A wide and solid understanding of land surface and vegetation processes
  • Experience of working with land surface models in a regional and global context
  • An ability to develop the model to include new processes
  • Skills to present results in scientific conferences and in scientific papers
  • Ability in scientific programming (e.g. Fortran, Python, linux)
  • Skills to develop new proposals for funding

To work for CEH, you must be eligible to live and work in the UK without the requirement for a work permit.
