Description

Are you interested in working in an international setting with people from different organisational and knowledge backgrounds working together to tackle major environmental and sustainability challenges? SEI is recruiting a highly motivated Research Associate with a strong background in research on integrated natural resource management, and quantitative methods. The successful candidate will contribute to exciting research programs especially on sustainable sanitation and on the sustainability of international commodity supply chains.

Key tasks

  • Carry out applied research and support implementation of projects linked to integrated natural resource management aiming for improved health, equity, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability;
  • Contribute towards research on the sustainability of international trade including mapping of international supply chains and assessing associated sustainability impacts and opportunities of commodity production systems;
  • Provide quantitative support to an exciting range of other work related to natural resource use and sustainable development;
  • Compilation and synthesis of project results into communication products (e.g. briefs, reports and scientific papers);
  • Contribute to  networking, knowledge management and outreach activities;
  • Contribute to relevant project proposals and tenders in order to raise external funds.

 

Requirements

The applicant should have a strong interest in quantitative approaches to help understand some of the major environmental and sustainability challenges the world is facing in the 21st Century. No previous working-experience is required but the candidate is expected to be capable of working both independently and in teams in a highly flexible and exciting research environment, whilst also being comfortable investing time as needed in basic data preparation and processing routines. The candidate will participate in research publications, international workshops and a range of activities developed by SEI researchers.

Necessary Qualifications

  • Advanced university degree (minimum Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental science, ecology, natural resource management or related field. If not formally trained in this field the candidate should demonstrate extensive personal experience for research and development associated with natural resource management;
  • Experience of research and/or practical work on integrated natural resource management;
  • Knowledge and experience of quantitative research methods and models, including processing and analyzing data in a common statistical package or environment (e.g. R);
  • Good communication skills, including the ability to make public presentations and communicate within multi-cultural settings;
  • Fluent in English

 

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Research background with skills in material flow analysis, life-cycle analyses, cost-benefit analysis, and governance analyses linked to integrated natural resource management;
  • Experience from planning, implementing and evaluation of development projects, especially in low- and middle income country contexts;
  • Previous experience in research on sustainability of international trade, consumption accounting, or the environmental and social impacts of land-use change;
  • Competence in GIS;
  • Competence in and working experience with international policy development, communications, publishing, media contacts, and networking, as well as knowledge management;
  • Fluency in UN languages other than English.

The selected candidate will be employed by SEI in Stockholm, following Swedish labor laws. Remunerations will be competitive based on the Swedish market and will be subject to Swedish income tax.
