Description

We are seeking a Research Associate in the field of Climate Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation to support and expand our science unit. The successful applicant will strengthen the science  team  through strong skills in quantitative  and  qualitative  research  methods, working  closely with our research associates, especially in the Pacific and Caribbean Small Island States and (West-­)Africa. The position will contribute to several development-­oriented research projects such as “Science-­based support of the national adaptation plan (NAP) process in francophone LDC in Sub-­Saharan Africa”, which focus on strengthening the science-­policy interface in the field of adaptation planning, by providing robust methods and analyses as well as through scientific capacity building. The position is based in Berlin, Germany, and will require occasional travel to our stakeholder regions and within Europe.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide the interface between quantitative climate modelling and on the ground adaptation needs through innovative thinking in the area of human-environmental-systems research
  • Design, manage and implement quantitative research and analytical projects in close collaboration with internal and external experts
  • Develop and apply conceptual vulnerability assessment methods, targeted to adaptation planning, using quantitative, qualitative as well as participatory methods, also in collaboration with a regional network of scientists
  • Contribute to the planning, implementation and facilitation of regional workshops and facilitation of stakeholder consultations
  • Writing of scientific publications, reports, work papers and other information material
  • Support the overall development of scientific capacity and science-­based approaches in partner institutions in the region
  • Lead a small team of experts and collaborate closely with experts in developing regions to support scientific capacity building strategies
  • Provide advice and support to PhD students affiliated with Climate Analytics.

Your profile

  • Minimum three years of research experience, preferably more, in climate adaptation, vulnerability and development research
  • A PhD in geography, economics, development or a related field is preferred, but comparable qualifications will also be considered
  • Experience with inter-disciplinary work and a profound interest in understanding major challenges of climate change for development
  • Strong interest in exploring, developing and implementing human-­environmental-­systems research methods
  • Experience and interest in applying and linking quantitative and qualitative research methods and ability to handle large datasets
  • Basic programming skills, preferably in R and/or Python and experience in spatial analysis
  • Experience in planning and conducting participatory research is an asset
  • A well-­developed sense for team work, excellent networking skills and ability to interact with a diverse array of people
  • Experience in project management and coordination are an advantage
  • Willingness to travel regionally and internationally is required
  • Excellent English and strong French writing and oral skills are a requirement; basic German skills are welcome, but not required.
