Research Associate

Mobile Applications Developer

Based in Wallingford

Salary: £19,740 – £23,390 

The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the UK’s Centre of Excellence for research in the terrestrial and freshwater environmental sciences.

We offer a prestigious Research Associate training programme to develop skilled UK/EU scientists for the future of European environmental research.  The 3-year training programme offers you the opportunity to gain practical experience of working within our active research projects whilst acquiring specialist and wider skills valuable for your future career.  Each Research Associate will deliver specific, measurable objectives intended to develop their skills as a researcher and to demonstrate their suitability for a research career. 

 Description of specific work to be undertaken and skills to be gained 

You will develop and implement mobile applications for the collection and dissemination of environmental data and information. 

You will also develop websites and the technical infrastructure underpinning mobile data collection.  You’ll work with quantitative ecologists within the Biological Records Centre (BRC) and information technology specialists within BRC, the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) and CEH Applications Development Group, as well as with specialist collaborators. 

Skills required on appointment 

  • As a minimum you’ll have a 2.1 degree in computing, or another relevant discipline or have the equivalent practical experience.
  • You will be effective at working in teams and you will need to demonstrate an ability to rapidly acquire new IT skills though formal courses, mentoring and well-organised self-learning. 
  • Some practical experience in applying IT to environmental science would be advantageous.
  • Ideally you will have practical experience of mobile application development.  
  • An understanding of web services and GIS would be an advantage.
  • An interest in the natural environment and/or have contributed to wildlife recording projects would be ideal.
