Research Associate

Land Surface Modeller

Based in Wallingford

Salary £26,450 - £29,710

The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the UK’s Centre of Excellence for research in the terrestrial and freshwater environmental sciences.

We are offering a comprehensive 3-year Research Associate traineeship during which you will learn to use the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES) model in a range of applications. The main focus will be on two projects: one looking at global water resources and the other looking at the Meso-America region, evaluating the model outputs of carbon and water budgets.

The area of work is in evaluating models that describe land surface processes at regional and global scales within Earth System Models and within climate change impact models. 

Skills required on appointment 

  • You will have a 2.1 Degree in either physical sciences or mathematics with some element/modules of computing, plus a PhD in a numerate science degree, or at least a Masters degree with relevant experience
  • Some existing programming experience and a preference for someone who has experience using earth observation data
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  •  Good teamworking skills demonstrating ability to develop effective internal and external collaborations within the scientific area.
  •  Good organisational and  time management skills, with an ability independently and to work to deadlines
  • You will be able to provide high quality data and statistical reports
