Overview:

WRI’s Climate and Energy Program seeks a Research Assistant/Analyst to provide administrative and research support to WRI’s new Shale Gas Initiative (http://insights.wri.org/news/2011/12/shale-gas-time-look-we-leap-any-further ). The initiative focuses on developing a comprehensive framework for evaluating impacts across the full shale gas development lifecycle that enables realistic and robust environmental and social impact assessments; on understanding the uncertainties relating to methane emissions and identifying best practices or regulatory approaches that can help minimize those emissions; and on beginning a policy dialogue on how the increased production of shale gas affects the energy and climate policy debates. This Initiative will provide an international forum to create strategies to link economic recovery and development with environmental protection and reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

This initiative has three major components:

1)      Create a framework for identifying environmental impacts across the shale gas lifecycle, which will be used to quantify the GHG emissions associated with shale gas development. The framework will be based on a review of existing studies, with an emphasis on characterizing key uncertainties and identifying best practices, policies and regulatory approaches to minimize lifecycle GHG emissions from methane leakage and other sources.

2)      Propose and work toward adoption of policies which ensure that use of shale gas reduces GHG emissions in the near term through displacement of coal and better management of methane emissions; and in the longer term by complementing, rather than displacing, lower-carbon resources and by enabling carbon dioxide capture and storage applications for natural gas end-use.

3)      Improve the transparency and governance of shale gas development in the U.S. and China, including making information on environmental impacts and best practices available to business, investors, policymakers, regulators, community members and others.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop and apply research, writing, and facilitation skills, while interacting with climate and energy experts from around the world. This is a full-time position with a term of 12 months.  The position is located at WRI’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., to begin as soon as possible.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct independent research, including employing macroeconomic models to inform the development future energy systems
  • Co-author Shale Gas Initiative papers
  • Communicate WRI research and analysis to external audiences through website, and other relevant media outlets
  • Provide timely responses to the information needs of project partners, stakeholders, and policymakers
  • Help organize and coordinate stakeholder workshops and conference calls
  • Provide administrative support and support other project activities as needed
Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, including coursework or experience in energy technology policy, energy planning, and engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and analysis
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team, juggle multiple priorities, and work under tight deadlines

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree or two years experience in energy technology policy, energy planning, and engineering
  • Solid understanding of shale gas techniques as well as the regulations and policies that affect its development
  • Experience in developing data and scenarios for MARKAL
  • Experience with shale gas techniques and policies in the US, China, or other large energy markets

Salary and benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience and skills. WRI offers a generous, comprehensive benefits package.  This position may be offered at either the Research Assistant or the Research Analyst level dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Duration:

The position is available for 12 months and may be extended, subject to funding. The start date is flexible, but early start dates are preferred.

Qualified applicants should apply online at www.wri.org/careers. All applications must be submitted online through this career portal in order to be formally considered.
