Research Assistant (paid internship): WorldFish Center, Cairo The WorldFish Center is a world-class scientific research organization. Our mission is to reduce poverty and hunger by improving fisheries and aquaculture. We are engaged in collaborative research with our partners in more than 50 countries. The Center is a nonprofit organization and a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).The Center is currently strengthening its program in Africa focusing on small-scale fisheries, aquaculture, policy studies and socio-economic development. To assist with this work, the Center is offering an internship for a motivated candidate, to start as soon as possible. The intern will carry out research and related work on a range of issues, according to the current priorities of the Center and project opportunities. These may include HIV and AIDS, climate change, food security and socio-economic trends in African fisheries. Working in our West and Central Africa team, he/she will provide support for activities across Africa, and may assist with global programs too. According to his/her capacities and motivation, and subject to project needs, the intern could be involved in fieldwork. Location: Egypt (Cairo)Closing date: 9 January 2009 Job Description:Responsibilities vary depending on priorities at the time but interns are usually expected to work on substantive socioeconomic research topics whilst also offering support in other areas, including administration tasks and proposal development. Typically, responsibilities might include:- collecting and/or collating data for further analysis,- analyzing data and drafting reports and scientific papers,- assisting in translating/editing scientific papers and documents,- assisting in finalizing concept notes and/or project proposals and liaising with donors, Eligibility: Applicants should have- Research interests in one or more of the following areas: rural development and markets, food security, climate change, socio-economics and political science, and/or human geography and environment.- Excellent written English and French, and ability to work comfortably in both languages.- At least a Bachelor’s degree in economics, social or political science, geography, fisheries or a rural development related field, Master’s degree in social sciences preferred.- Cultural sensitivity and willingness to work in a multicultural and interdisciplinary team, aptitude for communication, partnership and team work.- Very good analytical and technical skills, ability to review and synthesize existing research, and strong written presentation skills.- Strong capacity to work independently and a solid problem solving experience- Very good computer skills, including the use and manipulation of spreadsheets and graphics- Field experience with projects addressing natural resource management, fisheries or rural development in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, would be an advantage- Flexibility to work in a multi-cultural team, juggling multiple tasks and sometimes shifting priorities at short notice, within a schedule that is always busy and sometimes very busy. CompensationThis is a one year position, including a three month probation period. The intern will receive free accommodation, a stipend of US$1000 a month and airfares to and from Cairo.
