Description
Forest Research is the Research Agency of the Forestry Commission. It carries out research in a number of areas related to forests and woodlands. The current post is to work with a small team, under the direction of Professor Hugh Evans, Head of Forest Research (FR) in Wales based at the FR Unit in Aberystwyth. Among the range of topics covered by FR in Wales, a new European Union project, funded through Framework Programme 7, under the acronym REPHRAME (Research Extending Plant Health Risk and Monitoring Evaluation) has just commenced.

The project, involving 11 partners in 8 countries, carries out in-depth research on the problems posed by pine wood nematode (PWN) within Europe. The person appointed will work with Professor Evans and with Tom Jenkins and Tim Randle to develop models to predict the likelihood of trees being killed by the nematode pest.

Purpose of the Job

To develop process-based tree growth models simulating the impacts of pine wood nematode on tree growth and survival.

Key Work Areas

To work with the FR REPHRAME team to extend an existing process-based mathematical model to predict likelihood of tree mortality (wilt of affected trees) under a range of eco-climatic conditions

To develop a simplified version of the wilt model to enable stakeholders to enter country-specific data for prediction of wilt expression at a regional scale

To interact with modellers in France and China to integrate the process-based wilt model with models simulating the spread of pine wood nematode by natural and human-mediated means

To contribute to and support the REPHRAME consortium in delivering the aims of the project.
