Research Assistant Intern 2017 - Mainland Project @ Tanjong Jara Resort

Lang Tengah Turtle Watch is looking for someone willing to gain experience from an unpaid internship position in practical conservation work at their new mainland project, based at the prestigious Tanjong Jara Resort on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. 

You will be living in the staff quarters of the resort in our own private building, along with our permanent staff members.  Your main role will be becoming an integral part of our team, assisting our staff with whatever aspects they require, which may involve any of the following:

• Being based in our Visitors’ Hut (5/7 days a week)
• Carrying out nest inspections with resort guests
• Being on hand to chat with resort guests and answer any questions
• Helping with our nest adoption programme:  contacting local tender holders to purchase eggs otherwise being sold to the marketplace; sign up guests to the nest adoption programme; gather photographs and send out the nest adoption updates to the adoptees
• Ensuring the hatchery, visitors’ hut and our accommodation are kept clean and tidy at all times
• Giving briefings to guests on nights when we do hatchling releases 
• Overseeing hatchling releases
• Liaising with the Tanjong Jara Staff to inform them about hatchling releases, nest inspections etc. 
• Coordinating beach cleanups 
• Inputting turtle data gathered by our team of Rangers
• Updating our social media pages

Please note that you will not be solely responsible for these tasks, we have 2 permanent LTTW members of staff at Tanjong Jara Resort.  You will be there as a fully-intergrated team member and on hand to assist the staff.

This is a great opportunity to get involved with a small organisation that is growing rapidly.  This means that your work has a real impact of the success of the project and you will also be able to contribute in shaping the future of the project. 

For this role you will be sent to Lang Tengah for a week of training at our jungle camp before you come to Tanjong Jara, as this is a 5* resort and we want you to be able to answer any questions that may be thrown your way without hesitation.  http://www.tanjongjararesort.com

To be considered for the position you must be:

• Outgoing - this is one of the most important elements, as you will representing the organisation on a daily basis with resort staff and guests
• Organised
• Culturally sensitive
• Be well informed on wildlife conservation, biology and ecology as a whole
• Holding - or be in the process of acquiring - a related bachelors degree, or higher.
• Fluent in English

We are offering 10-week internships for the following dates: 

• 27th Feb - 8th May
• 1st May - 10th July
• 3rd July - 11th September

and a 7-week internship: 

• 4th September - 23rd October

This is an unpaid internship position.  However, Lang Tengah Turtle Watch will cover your in-country travel costs, food and accommodation whilst on the project.  Travel to and from Malaysia is at the expense of the intern.
