Description

IIASA’s Energy Program (ENE) focuses on the analysis of long-term interactions between energy, development, and the environment. The Program’s central research objective is to provide overarching scientific and strategic analysis for improving understanding of future energy transitions. Principal research activities include energy-economic and integrated assessment modeling as well as scenario development for the investigation of energy system dynamics, including endogenous technological change, evolution of the energy supply and energy service sectors, the integration of uncertainty and risk assessments into decision making, and the assessment of energy investment and financial mechanism for sustainable energy transitions.

In order to assist in its research activities the Program is seeking applications for the position of a Research Assistant.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides designated and all round routine research including reviews and assessments of the literature on various topics ranging from energy economics and technologies to climate change
  • Develops drafts and does background research for proposals and reports using computer-aided text and data processing, and bibliographic databases (both in English and German)
  • Assists with literature searches, development of Power Point presentations and data collection (spreadsheet-based and modeling research and analysis)
  • Supports with the planning of brochures, publications, direct mail, and other promotional materials, as well as maintaining information on the Web site
  • Assists with the development and implementation of research activities
  • Assists with scientific correspondence and review-related activities
  • Provides support for all aspects of report writing and scientific papers including correcting, proofing and editing research findings and technical data;
  • Scientific editing of reports, facilitating response to review, and assisting with report publication and dissemination;
  • Active participation in internal/external working meetings, including developing agendas, and preparing written summaries;
  • Preparing grant proposals; facilitating project planning and management, including development of project management tools, as needed.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Working towards an advanced degree (PhD) in energy economics, technology, environmental management and/or other relevant field
  • Familiarity with economic, social, energy and other statistical databases
  • Understanding of major global energy and climate issues
  • Initiative in undertaking research; flexible and adaptable in responding to deadlines in a high-pressure environment; and the ability to work in an international team with colleagues from diverse backgrounds
  • Solid organizational and priority setting skills, and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while still paying close attention to detail
  • Able to adapt to constantly changing demands and produce work with a high degree of accuracy, while working to strict deadlines within a busy office environment
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, Power Point)
  • Knowledge of Adobe Products (Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Illustrator), as well as Endnote and Mozilla Sunbird/Thunderbird advantageous
  • Web editing skills and a knowledge of Web design desirable (XHTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • Fluent English (must be able to edit text)
  • Good working knowledge of German advantageous
  • Ability to carry out projects independently with a minimum amount of supervision

Appointment Terms

The successful candidate will be offered a one-year, fixed-term contract with possibility for extension. The salary level will depend on educational background and demonstrated work experience. IIASA salaries are exempt from taxation in Austria but subject to the principle of income aggregation. Appointment includes moving and settlement allowances as well as a number of attractive additional benefits.
