The Office of Chief Scientist is the nexus of science at EDF, ensuring that all EDF policy positions are based on the best available natural and social science. To be most effective in this role the Office of Chief Scientist provides programmatic support for all scientists at EDF and fosters relationships with scientists outside the organization.

OVERALL FUNCTION

The Research Analyst will be a key team member in the Office of Chief Scientist, conducting basic secondary research and analysis on a wide variety of environmental topics. The Research Analyst will report to a Senior Scientist in the Office of Chief Scientist.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • BS in environmental science (e.g., biology, earth systems, energy, environmental health, etc) or environmental policy with a strong science background plus at least three years of professional experience in a science advocacy setting
  • Excellent research and analytical skills and an interest in performing rigorous analysis in support of highly visible work.
  • Intellectual agility and interest in working on a very wide variety of environmental topics.
  • Ability to think creatively and flexibly to approach problems from many possible directions.

Contacts and Communication:

  • Team-oriented with the ability to work independently as needed, using own judgment to plan, prioritize, and organize a diversified workload.
  • Ability to research and interpret scientific concepts, and with help from the OCS team, explain scientific concepts to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to interact with senior level scientists within and outside EDF.

Responsibility and Accountability:

  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of data and information into comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and a demanding workload in a fast-paced environment with a positive attitude.
  • Over time, learn to focus and hone analyses to be decision- or policy- relevant.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Eagerness to take on a wide variety of tasks and hold a variety of roles within projects.
  • Ability to independently identify areas of key importance and relevance to broad research projects.
  • Ability to work with colleagues and partners of varied backgrounds and experience.
  • Strong computer proficiency, including experience with Excel, Word, Google Scholar, and scholarly databases. Experience with citation managers like End Note, and Word Press, a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
