The WWF is currently accepting applications from outstanding candidates with a passion for nature conservation to fill the position of Forest Officer for its Central Africa Regional Programme Office (CARPO).
Location: WWF is opening this opportunity for you to work in central Africa and to take an active part in exciting conservation initiatives that are helping to shape the region’s future. The position will be based at our Regional Head office in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Regional Conservation Director / GHOA NL leader, the Regional Forest Officer major duties and responsibilities are:
- Leads the elaboration, implementation and supervision of WWF forest policy in the Congo Basin at the regional level including analyzes of existing forest and land use planning policies in the sub-region and advocates for policy changes as appropriate.
- Leads CARPO’s representation in SFM standard development processes as well as HCV process application at regional and international levels and support national level representation as necessary.
- Supports the development of project proposals, contacts with potential partners and fundraising at the regional level.
- Provides technical advice and backstopping to assure the coordination of WWF forest projects in the sub-region and to ensure the alignment with WWF network priorities, as well as with national and sub-regional priorities.
- Strengthens institutional capacity in the fields of forest conservation, sustainable forest management, legality, and land use planning.
- Assures that high quality regional and national FSC standards are developed and adopted, with a focus on WWF’s priorities (wildlife management, HCFV, etc.).
- Coordinates the regional forest activities to ensure integration, cooperation and synergy with the regional forest strategy (e.g. activities related to, but not limited to, slash-and-burn agriculture, charcoal production, agro-industry, mining, infrastructure development and land use planning).
- Coordinates, manages and liaises with other significant forest partnerships, initiatives and alliances in the sub-region, in particular CBFP members, World Bank, AFD, EU, KfW, USAID, COMIFAC, CIFOR, ITTO, FAO, ATO, IFIA, FSC, and logging companies.
- Represents WWF in meetings and other events where relevant. and/or
- Supports and coordinates WWF engagement with logging companies.
- Performs other duties at the CARPO Regional Conservation Director / GHOA NI’s request.
Key requirements:
- Knowledge: Master degree or equivalent in forestry. Fluency in English and French. Good knowledge of computer applications
- Experience: Minimum of 10 years professional experience in Africa in the area of forest ecosystems conservation or sustainable management of forest resources, high profile partnership development in both public and private sectors. Proven record of fundraising, particularly with Government Aid Agencies. Knowledge of forestry sector in Central Africa, including having a personal network within key national and sub-regional institutions. Proven expertise in programme development and project management.
- Skills and abilities: The position requires strong technical, communication and organizational skills. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with both technical and non-technical audiences as well as collaborate with people of different backgrounds, and familiarity with local and international organizations are needed. Candidates should be good team leaders and able to travel under difficult conditions. Familiarity with local and international organizations is needed.
