PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Regional Director of Development raises funds from a portfolio of assigned major donors and prospects and continually identifies and qualifies new prospects for NPCA from within the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. The position is focused on external contact and in-person cultivation. She/he works as part of a Development team headquartered in Washington, DC while also working in partnership with the Northeast Regional Office (NERO) team in New York City and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Office (MARO) team in Washington, DC. The position has specific responsibility for fundraising activity for NPCA’s biennial gala dinner in New York. She/he coordinates plans and strategizes closely with Development staff in Washington and the NERO and MARO teams, and, will be afforded significant autonomy. Ongoing fundraising efforts will focus primarily on individuals, and will also include occasional work with corporations (particularly for the New York gala) and foundations, particularly as they overlap with individual giving.


The Director will create and implement the major gifts fundraising plan for his/her assigned regions, including effective fundraising engagement of regional staff there as well as program and Executive staff elsewhere in NPCA. She/he will be responsible for producing personalized solicitation letters, maintaining and upgrading current donors, identifying, engaging, and soliciting new prospects, and planning and executing a limited number of special events. She/he must be comfortable dealing with substantive content and conservation issues. The position requires frequent travel throughout the greater New York, Philadelphia and Washington, DC metropolitan areas, as well as some travel throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions generally.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of approximately 125 prospects capable of giving $5,000 or more annually. Key elements include: a) engaging program and Executive staff as appropriate in execution of prospect strategies to maximize giving from assigned prospects; b) sustaining high level of direct prospect contact with emphasis on in-person and telephone interaction, and live solicitation; c) scheduling and preparing briefing materials for visits by President and other senior staff; and d) reporting promptly on prospect interactions. (60% of time)

2. Identify new major gift prospects and move them into his/her portfolio for qualification and initial cultivation. (10% of time)

3. Manage fundraising component of biennial New York gala dinner in close cooperation with Regional Director and NERO team. Prepare plans, identify and solicit prospects, liaison with Washington DC Development staff, ensure prompt follow up. Develop and staff other, smaller cultivation, solicitation, or stewardship events as appropriate. (15% of time(25% of position's time in years with dinner; 5% of time in off years))

4. With Regional Directors, manage the New York Advisory Board , the Mid-Atlantic Leadership Council, and National Board and Directors in the region. Maximize this resource for new prospect leads and personal engagement leading to higher giving. (10% of time)

5. Participate as integral member of Development Department; strategize with other gift officers; participate in Development Department meetings and retreats. (5% of time)

OTHER FUNCTIONS:
Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
MINIMUM TOUR OF DUTY: 8:30 – 5:00 Monday through Friday.

SCOPE OF POSITION:
The Director fulfills the staff leadership role in raising funds from individuals living in NPCA’s Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. By being donor-centered in cultivation and solicitation, this position raises funds for the entire organization irrespective of geography. The position is charged with maximizing unrestricted gifts. The Director will have administrative support (50% of one position) within the NERO office, as well as a shared stewardship coordinator in Washington. In addition, central Development Operations staff such as prospect research and travel provide additional targeted support. However, the Director must be able to conduct many aspects of his/her position relatively independently. While the position is part of the headquarters-based Development Department, it is essential that the Director forge a strong, productive partnership with the Regional Directors (and their staff) in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regional Offices. This position will interact frequently with members of NPCA’s Board of Trustees as well as senior executive leadership.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have clearly demonstrated successful history of calling, visiting and soliciting prospects in person. Experience working with a wide range of constituents including corporate executives and high net worth individuals. Candidate must be prepared to travel frequently. Candidates must be committed to the park protection and advocacy work of NPCA. Excellent writing and oral communications skills are essential as is the demonstrated ability preparing individual funding proposals. The successful candidate will possess the ability to set priorities, coordinate multiple projects, handle details, and work effectively under pressure with minimal supervision. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and at least five years experience in major gift fundraising. Proficiency in MS Word and Excel and database management software is required.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND DEXTERITY: No special requirements
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: Cubicle office setting. Position travels 25-40% of the time, primarily along the northeast corridor.
