Overview

In 2006, BirdLife International created the “Southern Cone Grasslands Alliance” (or Alianza de Pastizal) as a response to the rapidly growing threats facing the Pampas grasslands ecoregion of southern South America. This cross-sectorial initiative aims "To conserve the Southern Cone natural grasslands through coordinated actions between Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina, including producers, civil-society organizations, academia and governments, within a framework of harmonic and sustainable development in the region". The Alliance was founded by the four BirdLife Partners in the region (Aves Argentinas, Aves Uruguay, Guyra Paraguay and SAVE Brasil), but has now expanded to include producers, producers associations, government agencies and research institutes.

The Alliance is led by a regional coordinator and four national coordinators, guided by a board of director with the support of a beef certification council and a technical advisory committee. BirdLife is currently seeking to hire a new regional coordinator for the Alliance, to work from the office of one of the four BirdLife Partners, reporting to the BirdLife Secretariat and the Alliance board of directors. The regional coordinator is responsible for leading, coordinating, and supporting activities and representing the Southern Cone Grasslands Alliance, including facilitating the strategic development and consolidation of the Alliance, and at the same time, supporting the ongoing conservation work of the Grasslands Alliance partners.
