We are looking for a conservation-focussed Regional Manager for the Lower North Island region.

We have a rare opportunity to join the Forest & Bird team in one of our Regional Conservation & Volunteer Manager roles. This position is based in Wellington and holds oversight for the Lower North Island region. The purpose of this role is to deliver our strategic plan and conservation activities throughout the region by: leading and supporting campaigns on conservation issues; influencing environmental protection rules, resource-use decisions, and significant activities on private and public land, and the conservation estate; and providing strategic guidance to the delivery of on-the-ground conservation.

Travel is a necessary requirement for this position so you will need to hold a current and clean New Zealand driver’s licence and have the ability and motivation to travel regularly.

This position is for approximately 12 months to cover parental leave.

To be successful in this role, you will need the following:

  • A background in conservation, ecology or science;
  • Sound working knowledge of New Zealand’s natural environment and conservation issues;
  • Experience dealing with RMA statutory planning processes and conservation / environmental legislation;
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan and complete projects on time and within budget;
  • An ability to effectively organise and facilitate meetings and events; 
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills (with media experience an advantage);
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people of any status or background;
  • Experience overseeing conservation projects and/or organising and working with volunteers;
  • The ability to effectively use office software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook;
  • A high level of personal motivation, ability to initiate and complete tasks independently, and in a timely manner;
  • Relevant, current and clean New Zealand driver’s license.
