Description

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

Recent studies suggest that the Filchner Ice Shelf system (FISS) region of Antarctica might soon experience a wholesale change in oceanographic regime with potentially dramatic consequences for the ice shelf, its tributary ice streams and sea level rise. Based at our Cambridge office, you will be part of a team assessing this threat by gathering glaciological and oceanographic measurements to optimise and validate a suite of regional models that will provide the best possible prediction of the 21st century contribution of FISS to global sea level.

You will be responsible for undertaking regional climate model runs with the objective of providing atmospheric input data required for the ocean modelling components of the project. This will include an analysis of the impact of model resolution, development of statistical downscaling techniques and an assessment of the data uncertainties. In addition, you will run the model for various periods over the next century forced by different greenhouse gas emission and ozone recovery scenarios. This work is part of a collaborative NERC project between climate scientists and oceanographers at BAS, the National Oceanography Centre, University College London, the University of Exeter and the Met Office Hadley Centre.

Qualifications: You will have a Ph.D. in the atmospheric sciences, physics, mathematics, or a related discipline, together with experience running regional or global climate models and an understanding of atmospheric dynamics. Moreover, you will also have demonstrated an ability to conduct original, independent high-quality scientific research, with a track-record in the peer-reviewed literature. Finally, you will have experience of programming in a Linux/Unix environment and be familiar with data analysis and visualisation software (IDL/MatLab/Python/NCL).

Duration: The position is a full-time fixed-term position of 1.5 years duration

Salary: Salary will be in the range of £26,715 to £30,000 per annum. We offer a generous benefits package including a final salary pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave.
