Description
The regional climate and natural resource advisors will (for 80% of their time):
Set and lead the strategy and direction across UK Government for climate and natural resources priorities in West Africa.
Provide policy and technical advice and coordination, and develop strong partnerships with external stakeholders to deliver the climate and natural resources shift.
Lead on the development and implementation of regional strategies - ensuring that UK bilateral, centrally managed programmes and the UK’s multilateral investments are sufficiently coherent and aligned and to make the UK an effective leader on climate and natural resources.
Work closely with the UK cross Government climate diplomacy leads, climate environment advisors and prosperity leads within the region.

In addition, 20% of this role will support the Nigeria Mission to:

Set the strategic direction of DFID Nigeria’s climate and environment work, working with programme funded advisers (one on renewable energy and one on climate smart agriculture and resilience) to help shape our future approach and programming. They will also help drive forward work on the BEIS International Climate Finance projects, particularly around green finance and emissions reduction. Ultimately, delivering the ambition set-out in HMG’s strategic approach.

This post is shared between DFID and BEIS and is intended to facilitate increased collaboration across UK Government on our strategic interests in Sub-Saharan Africa. All positions will be 2 year loans to DFID, objectives will be jointly agreed between DFID and BEIS, with line management responsibility also shared.

Responsibilities

Strategic leadership – ability to set a strategy and drive implementation to deliver HMG’s Climate and Natural Resources priorities in West Africa. This will involve bringing together cross-UK Government policy and programming including and beyond climate and natural resources to deliver a coherent and ambitious package to drive real change.

Strong collaborative working and influencing skills. Ability to build excellent cross-UK Government and external relationships, including with other donors, multilaterals and country governments and use these to secure support for and drive implementation of the Climate and Natural Resources priorities.

A strong understanding and/or experience of working in the field of climate change impacts, adaptation and resilience.

A strong understanding and/or experience of low carbon development and climate change mitigation.

Understanding and/or experience of environmental economics, climate and environmental finance.
 

Candidates are not required to be accredited to a DFID Advisory cadre. If not accredited, candidates should seek to accredit within the first year of the posting. Candidates must demonstrate sufficient technical competency in areas 3-5 above.
