Regional Biologist

The Wildlife Habitat Council is seeking a qualified individual for the full-time position of Regional Biologist based out of its headquarters in Silver Spring, MD.

The Regional Biologist is responsible for overseeing and initiating Wildlife at Work programs in the eastern states of the USA to advance WHC’s mission to promote and certify habitat conservation and management on working lands through partnerships and education. The qualified candidate will have a working knowledge of natural resource issues and initiatives in the eastern US states and demonstrated ability to grow relationships and develop partnerships to implement high quality conservation projects on corporate lands. The Regional Biologist reports to the Director of Field Programs.

Job responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities of the position include

  • Work with program staff, identify and engage member and non-member businesses to implement high quality habitat projects on their lands.
  • Perform site biodiversity and habitat assessments and prepare reports identifying projects to enhance wildlife value on corporate properties with strong employee and community involvement.
  • Maintain positive relations with existing members through outstanding delivery of services offered by WHC across diverse industry sectors and geographic region.
  • Participate in the annual review of programs applying for certification under the Wildlife at Work banner.
  • Use knowledge of diverse industries and personnel to identify, cultivate and recruit new members and projects for Wildlife Habitat Council.
  • Participate fully in all aspects of WHC’s Annual Symposium, workshops, social media activities and other programs as designated.
  • Use knowledge of a) utilities industry to engage utility members in high-quality conservation and education projects and ROW stewardship programs across      North America and beyond OR b) environmental remediation to assist WHC members and partners to include conservation, community outreach as well as environmental education in reuse planning and design.

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Graduate degree in natural science field or related with knowledge of multiple ecosystems in the eastern United States/Canada
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accountability and work independently while functioning as part of a coordinated development team.
  • High level of comfort and ability with technology – computer skills must include MS Office and familiarity with ArcGIS
  • Demonstrated experience/ knowledge of challenges and opportunities for corporate conservation across many industry sectors. More specifically, a minimum of three years of experience in remediation or utility-related projects.
  • The candidate must have the ability and interest to carry out field surveys which requires being outdoors during inclement weather; standing or walking for periods of time; engaging in close visual inspection of ground-based fauna and flora and kneeling, lifting and reaching. The position will also require prolonged periods of sitting and typing.
