The Western Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) has an immediate opening for an experienced Regional Biologist headquartered in Rancho Cordova, CA.  The incumbent will become part of a team of biologists, engineers, and other professionals responsible for the conservation, enhancement and restoration of wetland and associated habitats in California, primarily the Sacramento Delta, San Francisco Bay and coastal regions of California. The incumbent will report to the Director of Conservation Programs.

 

Qualifications

Candidates must have, at minimum, a Bachelor of Science degree in a natural resources field.  An advanced degree is preferred.  Applicants must have at least two years of relevant field experience in waterfowl or other water bird habitats, and/or wetland restoration/management.  Applicants must have a basic knowledge of state and federal wetland conservation programs, policies and laws. Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as inter-personal skills, are required.  Proven grant/proposal writing skills are desired. An understanding of avian biology and ecology is desirable. Project management and team building skills are highly desirable.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Incumbent’s duties and responsibilities include the initiation, coordination and delivery of public and private wetland conservation projects and other related conservation activities.  Project initiation includes developing strong relationships with appropriate public and private landowners and agencies that have current or future potential to establish partnerships with DU to restore and enhance wetlands.  Project delivery includes serving as project manager, coordinating with landowners, DU engineering staff, contractors and permitting agencies to ensure timely and on-budget implementation of projects.  Management of the program budget, negotiation of project agreements, field monitoring and entries related to project tracking through DU’s business information system are also required.  

 

The Regional Biologist will write and submit proposals to various funding agencies, foundations and other funding sources to secure project funds and will also be responsible for the administration of these funds.  In addition, the incumbent will promote DU’s accomplishments and needs to key DU volunteers and major donors.  Establishing and maintaining good relationships with conservation partners and funding entities are essential.  Overnight travel may be required as needed.
