Where: The position will develop and deliver conservation programs in New York and surrounding states. Position will be based in central NY, which is part of the Ducks Unlimited Great Lakes/Atlantic Region.
Description: The successful applicant will join a highly motivated team dedicated to accomplishing DU’s mission of waterfowl and wetlands conservation. This position will report to the Manager of Conservation Programs and will be responsible for the development, administration, and delivery of conservation programs in New York and surrounding states, with a focus on the Lake Ontario and Lake Erie watersheds and St. Lawrence River Valley. Responsibilities will include coordination, implementation, and administration of DU’s conservation programs on public and private lands in New York including coastal and inland wetland restoration and land protection activities. The candidate will be responsible for the management of program operations including project identification, development, and delivery, preparation of agreements and management plans, coordination with private landowners and public agency partners, securing public and philanthropic grants, and fiscal management of the program. The successful applicant will also work with DU volunteers and fund-raising staff to provide support for organizational goals. The candidate will work closely with DU public policy staff and the Manager of Conservation Programs to serve as DU’s voice on state public policy issues.Other duties may be assigned as necessary to fulfill DU’s mission of wetland conservation.
Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of inland and coastal wetland values and functions, restoration techniques, and management is desired. Knowledge of regional conservation issues and experience managing and delivering large scale, complex conservation programs are important, as is experience with project management and knowledge of land protection mechanisms. Candidate must have a good understanding of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation, the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, and the role of outdoor enthusiasts in supporting wetland and wildlife conservation.
Skills/Abilities: Minimum B.S. in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, or related science is required; emphasis on waterfowl and wetland ecology preferred. A Master of Science in a related field is preferred. Previous field experience with waterfowl and wetland ecology/management will be an important consideration. Applicant must have strong interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written. Proven grant writing and administration skills are desired. Ability to work closely with local, state and federal natural resource agency personnel, private landowners, and other conservation partners is essential. Ability to prepare reports, funding proposals, and budgets is necessary. This position requires occasional work out-of-doors, possibly in inclement weather, and may require physical exertion or lifting as needed.
Travel: Candidate must be able and willing to travel frequently, including overnight travel.
