Your task as a Recycling Responder will be to support and encourage participation in the Council’s recycling services. You will work directly with our community, speaking to residents face-to-face, with the aim of maintaining sustainable and responsible waste management. You’ll provide a same-day response for any collection issues and support promotional activities. Your efforts will ensure that kerbside collection schemes produce clean, quality materials and that we have accurate data concerning participation, contamination and tonnages collected.

Objectives:

To support and encourage participation in the Council’s waste services via face to face communications with residents of the Borough. To ensure sustainable and responsible waste management by residents of the Borough and to provide a same day response to resolve collection issues. To ensure that clean, quality materials arise from the kerbside collection schemes and accurate data is maintained for participation, contamination and tonnages collected.

Duties will involve working closely with the council’s waste collection operatives therefore the post holder will be expected to work outside normal office working hours on a frequent basis e.g. 7.00am start with the collection crews.

Waste collections are undertaken regularly throughout the year in all weathers where it is safe to do so. The post holder will be expected to spend the majority of their time outside.

Some attendance at evening meetings and weekend events will also be required.

Travel is required throughout the Borough. The post holder must hold a full driving licence and be willing to undergo any required training.

Outputs:

To provide a same day response to issues raised via the ‘In-Cab Data System’ utilised by the council’s collection operatives and to provide a daily report on actions taken.

Provide support to individual properties/residents to resolve collection issues and to change lifestyles and behaviours in order to reduce waste and recycle more.

To assist with the implementation of new waste reduction, reuse and recycling services/projects, to bring a stepped improvement in the councils recycling performance.

To participate in promotional activities and community visits around the Borough, raising awareness of the councils waste and recycling services, motivating customers to participate in schemes and encouraging residents to reduce their waste, reuse and recycle.

Essential Selection Criteria:

1. An understanding of how to achieve a high standard of customer service and experience of working in a customer focused environment.

2. Excellent interpersonal communication, negotiation and influencing skills

3. A high standard of IT proficiency including relevant software packages and MS Office applications such as Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Internet Explorer

4. Experience of delivering promotional activities

5. Excellent numeracy and literacy skills

6. An enthusiastic interest in the environment and waste and recycling services in particular

7. Knowledge and understanding of the waste services local authorities provide

8. Be self-motivated, able to work independently and use initiative when required

9. Demonstrate problem solving abilities using logical, analytical and innovative thinking

10. A positive and respectful attitude to diverse cultural and value systems

11. The post holder MUST hold a full driving licence and have the ability to travel around the Borough
