Description
The Integrated Waste Management and Resource Efficiency Project (WMR) conducts policy analysis with a view to promoting sustainable utilization of physical resources in Asia. During the current Research Phase (April 2007-March 2010), the project focuses on the following themes:

(1) Improved municipal solid waste management, especially community-based approaches.
(2) Capacity development for the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) at the national level
(3) Regional initiatives to enhance resource efficiency and to address problems related with improper waste treatment and disposal, trade in second-hand goods, and recycling.
(4) Information management on chemicals in electronic products

The research is conducted in cooperation with various institutes in the Asia-Pacific region, and sometimes in collaboration with international organisations such as the United Nation Environmental Programme, the United Nations Centre for Regional Development, and with the Governments of Japan and other related countries.
In April 2010, IGES enters its Fifth three-year Research Phase and the planning of this phase will take place during 2009. It is thus not yet finally decided what areas IGES will be working on in its next phase, and what themes will be in focus. However, the current work on integrated waste management and the 3Rs will continue and it is expected that these activities will be extended to cover sustainable consumption and production, especially policies related with sustainable consumption.
