Description

Africa is registering phenomenal economic growth from an average annual growth rate of real output of 1.8% in the ‘80s, 2.6% in the 90’s and 5.3% from 2000-2010. Africa is richly endowed with natural resources such as oil, gas, minerals, forests, arable land and others that have driven the rapid economic growth. Africa’s average growth rate was 2% higher than the average growth rate of the world economy and some African economies

Duties and Responsibilities

The consultant will be expected to:

  • Contextualize impacts of climate change to transformative growth in Africa;
  • Review recent climate economic impact studies undertaken;
  • Identify sources of wealth creation for transformative growth in Africa;
  • Investigate the impact of climate change on these sources;
  • Review Africa’s position on sustainable development goals (SDGs ) and analyse the climate sensitivity of the proposed SDGs and targets;
  • Review African country studies on assessment of investment and financial flows[1];
  • Analyse the range of options for adaptation and mitigation measures to safeguard Africa’s economic growth.

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to set out a coherent argument in presentations and group interactions.

 

 


Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Masters level degree in Economics, Climate change, Agricultural sciences, natural sciences or any other relevant field.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 7 solid years of experience in conducting research on topical Africa development issues including climate change;
  • Solid understanding of Africa’s economic transformation agenda ;
  • Proven past experiencing in quantifying climate economic impacts ;
  • Sound knowledge of other key development issues in Africa and major Africa-wide policies/strategies including Africa position on 2015 global development agendas on SDGs, climate change, DRR and financing for development ;
  • An understanding of climate science and climate finance architecture ;
  • Previous experience in drafting research papers on key development issues in Africa as part of a team of experts or individually and presenting issues/technical papers in regional and global development forum ;
  • Previous work experience or association with renowned  Africa and global think  tanks on climate change issues ;
  • Knowledge and experience of global negotiation processes  on climate change, Disaster risk Reduction, SDGs and others and
  • Familiarity with UNDP is an asset.

Language:

  • Excellent knowledge of both French and English
