The Rapid Response Specialist will assist with communications and congressional education.   The position is stimulating, critical to the success of TWS.  The candidate should be familiar in using all current technology in researching issues, able to distil academic papers, particularly economic information into plain English and one-pagers, and to respond rapidly to mistruths spread about key policies.   The goal is to get the clearest facts, and the best arguments out to Members of Congress and the public by conducting unique research that tells the best story about public lands.  The individual will report directly to the Vice President of Public Policy and also collaborate directly with TWS’s communications team. 

Responsibilities:

  • Magnify TWS’s presence in the public lands policy discourse through research, writing, media outreach, and events.
  • Develop educational tools for working with congressional offices.
  • Liaise with TWS’s various communications departments.
  • Research and write short articles, op-eds, blog posts, and other written materials pertaining to current events in public lands policy, environmental policy, and other related subjects.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with administration officials, external groups, and land researchers.

Qualification and Attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, communications, environment, or related field.
  • At least 3-5 years of work experience in policy, media relations, journalism, campaign work or a related field.
  • Federal- and state- level executive and legislative branch experience.
  • Must have a sense of humor and be able to adapt to changing situations.
  • Comfort with working under pressure and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment with many simultaneous moving pieces.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including ability to connect with a general audience.
  • Ability to take initiative, develop ideas, and see them through to implementation.
  • Ability to share information and work collaborately with colleagues.
  • In depth knowledge of computer systems and programs (i.e., Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Capacity to understand complex and unfamiliar subjects.
  • Willingness to work occasional nights or weekends a plus.
  • Must support the mission of TWS and be committed to a broad conservation agenda.

The following are not required but are a plus:

  • Graduate degree in public policy, communications, or a related field
  • Knowledge of public lands policies and the statutory framework of public lands management
  • Experience with graphic design programs
