Description

A unique and exciting opportunity to play a fundamental role in managing, conserving, and shaping Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall Commons for future residents and visitors to enjoy.

The Commons Conservators are responsible for the management and administration of the Commons. After 30 years in the role, our current Warden is retiring and so we are looking for a very special person to fill his shoes.

Located in the heart of the town, lies a very magical green space, Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall Commons. Designated a Local Wildlife Site, the Commons are 256 acres comprising secondary woodland, grassland, scrub, a small amount of restored heathland, sandstone rock outcrops, several ponds, two car parks, two cricket pitches and a network of paths and tracks for exploring it all.

Our new Ranger will advise and guide on land management, contributing to short- and long-term strategy, projects, planning and monitoring the impact on nature conservation. This varied and fulfilling role is predominantly outdoors, managing contractors and volunteers, health and safety, risk management, the monitoring and enforcement of bylaws and policies and being present to engage with our community and visitors. Working from home, the Ranger will be required to manage their administrative tasks to include quarterly reports, keeping records, managing budgets and contributing to social media posts and written publications. We guarantee, no two days will be the same in this exciting position.

We are looking for someone with the following skills and attributes:

  • A qualification in land management, ecology, conservation, or another relevant field. In exceptional cases this may be varied.
  • Significant experience working in conservation or land management. Tree management and heathland management experience would be an advantage.
  • Understand the ecology and urban context of the Commons and how to manage them to optimise their value for people and wildlife.
  • Strong inter-personal skills, good communication skills, both verbal and written. Community outreach and familiarity with social media would be an advantage.
  • Ability and willingness to develop expert knowledge of the geography, history, natural history, wildlife, usage patterns, and legal and management context of the Commons.
  • Project management experience including planning and execution, supervising contractors and volunteers, managing budgets.
  • A UK driving licence.
  • Current first aid certificate (or willingness to undertake training).
