Purpose of the Position:
No Rate Hikes for Dirty Energy! Cleaner is Cheaper! Even as electricity demand is flat for residential customers and small businesses, Duke Energy is promoting additional dirty power plants so they can increase their profits. Evidence shows that cleaner and cheaper options exist for North Carolina. Instead of continuing needless investments into outdated technology, Duke Energy could save North Carolinians around 57% on their energy bills in the next two decades by switching to energy efficiency technologies and renewable energy resources.  We are demanding that Duke provide clean and affordable electricity to ratepayers in North Carolina.

We are looking for an organizer to build out our campaign in the state capital and around the triangle.  This position will focus on engaging volunteers and developing volunteer leadership to engage in the fight for clean energy with just, affordable rates.  Additionally, many key partners are based in the triangle, and working with the coalition, and keeping tabs on the state assembly are also top priorities for this position.  Greenpeace also has a street fundraising office in Raleigh, and while this position has no fundraising involvement, the successful organizer will also engage fundraisers in volunteer campaign work.

Job Scope and Responsibilities:
A Greenpeace Field Organizer is passionate, driven, strategic, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. Organizers use a wide variety of strategies and tactics on campaigns to protect people and the planet from corporate greed.  Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating and recruiting for outreach events that grow our base of volunteers and public support for our campaign.
  • Building and retaining a team of volunteer leaders with regular meetings.
  • Coaching volunteers to lead interdependent teams of activists in communities.
  • Quickly developing knowledge of Greenpeace issues, planning and executing successful campaign events, and generating media coverage for our campaigns.
  • Coordinating closely with other Greenpeace staff and members of the campaign team, actions team, media team, online team and grassroots team.
  • Building and cultivating relationships with organizations and grass-tops leaders including representing Greenpeace in a large regional coalition.
  • Producing ongoing reports, data tracking, and critical analysis of work.
  • Working weekend and evening events as needed, ability to have a flexible schedule and work long hours when necessary.  At Greenpeace we work with each organizer to create a healthy work/life balance, but this is not a 9-5 job.
  • Other responsibilities as required by the Field Organizing Director and Organizing Manager.

Required Skills, Experience:

  • 1-2  years of grassroots organizing experience
  • Proven ability to coordinate with a collaborative team and self-direct work to deliver results.
  • Critical thinking, strategic insight, and time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated talent recruiting, building relationships and cultivating commitments with a diverse range of activists, volunteers, and partners.
  • Ability to recruit volunteers in both urban and suburban/rural areas.  Experience recruiting volunteers via phone banking/canvassing/house parties/home visits.
  • Ability to work on a fast-paced, often shifting campaign with many moving pieces.
  • Strong communication skills - written and oral – with attention to detail.
  • Commitment to grassroots organizing and non-violent direct action, and building diverse and inclusive movements as a means of affecting change
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel nationally 2-3 times per year.
  •  Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license, for regular regional travel, is required.

 Preferred Background:

  • While prior experience in environmental advocacy is not required, an ideal candidate has a track record of using innovative social justice strategies to win against a corporate target and/or to pressure a decision-maker.
  • Strong consideration will be given to candidates who have local relationships and prior knowledge of energy issues in North Carolina.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.

Additional Information:

  • Location: Raleigh, NC
  • This position will be a one-year contract with the possibility to renew.
