StatusThis is a permanent post subject to satisfactory completion of a six month probationary period.The Quarry Shop as part of CATThe Quarry Shop and Café was set up by the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) on St. David's Day, 1st March 1979, as part of CAT's holistic outlook on a sustainable way of living, both for the individual and the planet.The main aims of the Quarry Shop and Café are to promote wholefoods, natural remedies and vegetarian cookery - particularly to the local community, as well as to incoming tourists. In 1997 the Shop and Café out-grew one building and the Shop moved to new premises a few doors away, although the two remain integrally linked. The Centre for Alternative Technology’s visitor centre receives approximately 65,000 visiting members of the public and runs over 100 residential courses. Its mission statement is to inspire, inform and enable in all areas of alternative living.Job SummaryThe Quarry Cafe Assistant Co-ordinator/Manager is responsible along with the Manager, for the operation and development of CAT’s Cafe outlet in Machynlleth. The role combines general cafe duties with assisting the Manager with strategic, financial and personnel management functions.Responsibilities
To carry out general café duties including serving customers and customer care; cooking; stockroom maintenance; maintaining product/food quality.
To replenish stocks as required; ordering as necessary; maintaining appropriate stock levels.
To develop the menu by increasing the range and supply of organic, fair traded and locally produced produce.
To promote the Quarry Cafe and its green ethos through the presentation and display of products and information.
To promote CAT whenever/however possible within the Quarry Cafe.
To promote good communication between the main CAT site and the Quarry Cafe.
To supervise and train General Staff.
To be highly competent at cash handling and banking and to maintain records accordingly.
To develop the Trading Policy in line with the mission statement of CAT.
To comply fully with the workplace Health and Safety precautions and procedures.
To maintain standards in line with Environmental Health Department requirements.
To assist with the maintenance and cleanliness of the fabric and the facilities of the Quarry Cafe.
To participate and work in a co-operative environment.
To take on any responsibility of other ACMs at the Quarry Shop or Quarry Cafe in their absence – this includes long or medium term leave such as sickness or holidays and short-term absences.
All Permanent Staff – Co-operative Duties
To attend a minimum of 6 monthly staff meetings per year (or such other number as may be agreed with the Management Group).
To consider issues presented to the staff body and be involved in the consensus decision-making process regarding such issues.
To input to policy development when policies are proposed by the Directions Team
To input to the strategy process when requested by the Directions Team.
To comply all CAT’s policies and processes as they are amended from time to time. To read and act upon policies and processes as they are approved.
To be responsible for own health and safety plus that of others as defined in the job description. To report to the Health and Safety Committee any matters of concern regarding health and safety.

Experience of cafe work/catering including cash handling.
