The Canal & River Trust is an exciting new charity responsible for 2,000 miles of historic waterways in England and Wales. The Trust has a significant investment property portfolio worth some £460m which it manages for income and capital growth for the benefit of the Trust. The property portfolio was granted to the Trust by Government as an endowment. Defra retains an interest in ensuring the portfolio is well-managed and its value grows over time to provide income to be used to maintain the waterways in a sustainable condition over the long term. Accordingly, Defra and the Trust have agreed jointly to appoint a Protector to oversee the strategy of the Trust in respect of the portfolio.
