 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Central Savannas Program (CSCP) of the Nature Conservancy comprehends 5 ecoregions (Caatinga, Cerrado, Pantanal, Chaco and Pampas) in 4 countries (Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina).  The Protected Areas Coordinator will provide technical and policy leadership to the CSCP to support national and sub-national governments create new public protected areas and consolidate existing ones, primarily in the Caatinga, Cerrado, Pampas and Pantanal.  S/he is expected to work closely with the Chaco Environmental Coordinator to support the process of protected areas creation and consolidation in that ecoregion.  We are looking for a candidate who thinks strategically and who is capable of working with non-traditional approaches to conservation such as designing and improving financial and legal instruments aimed to achieve conservation of protected areas at scale.  The candidate must be articulate and diplomatic, have superb communication skills, and be able to express his/her ideas concisely and clearly.  S/he is expected to liaise with government officials, multi- and bi-lateral agencies, the private sector and NGOs at the highest levels to explore opportunities to create and consolidate public protected areas.  It is essential that the candidate demonstrate the ability to write project proposals to multi-laterals, bi-laterals, governments and the private sector.  The Coordinator will report to the Director of the Central Savannas Conservation Program and will work closely with the External Affairs Team.
 BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
 KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
• Candidates must have an advanced degree in business, law, economics, natural resources management, public policy or related field (combined with application to conservation);
• At least 5 years of working experience in Brazil;
• Track record of successfully fundraising with governments, multi-laterals, bi-laterals and the private sector;
• Familiarity with economic, fiscal, financial and legal mechanisms that although are not traditional to conservationists may prove useful to help governments create new public areas and consolidate existing ones;
• Excellent knowledge of the legal framework, fiscal incentives and economic instruments that supports or challenges the conservation of public and private lands in Brazil;
• Excellent skills on project writing, planning, monitoring and evaluation;
• Talent for coordination, pulling together moving parts and common sense;
• Clear thinker, planner and communicator; capable of expressing ideas concisely and simply to a range of audiences;
• Ability to influence discussions and behavior of peers by quality of thinking and skill in handling relationships;
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English and Portuguese;
• Familiarity with the political environment of Brazil;
• Field or project management experience;
• Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary setting.

• Prepare and present project proposals and negotiate with government, bilateral and multilateral agencies to achieve program goals;
• Solicit program support through clear written communications, including proposal writing and other written materials;
• Strong communications and presentation skills;
• Work in partnership with other organizations in a collaborative and advisory capacity.


WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
• Willingness to travel up to 50% of time.
