The Philanthropy Research Manager-Institutional Giving will be part of a research team working to support a dynamic Philanthropy department of over 60 staff in 23 offices across the nation. Approximately 60% of his/her focus will be on corporate and foundation prospects and 40% will be on individuals. This position can work out of the Trust for Public Land office in either San Francisco or Chicago.

The Manager will utilize his/her experience and skill at mining research resources to identify potential new major donors. He/she will also research prospects identified by Philanthropy staff. Collecting and interpreting data from in-house and on-line databases, the Manager will create clear and informative prospect profiles that are used to qualify prospects and assist in determining appropriate cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.

The Manager will communicate with the Directors of Institutional Giving to stay up-to-date on their priorities. He/she will also schedule and facilitate strategy calls to discuss Institutional Giving prospects.

To help identify fundraising opportunities and priorities across the organization, this position will also help to arrange periodic briefings for National Philanthropy staff and/or Institutional Giving staff by project and program staff regarding their work and related fundraising opportunities.

The position requires a strong familiarity with the prospect pool of foundation and corporate donors, as well as an understanding of research strategies and the fundraising profession.

The Manager must have excellent organizational skills, a keen attention to detail, and excellent analytical and time management skills. Candidates must have the ability to work independently, as well as the ability to work well with a team of diverse professionals.

The ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality is absolutely required.

The Philanthropy Research Manager-Institutional Giving will report to the Director of Prospect Research, who is based in San Francisco.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with the Directors of Institutional Giving to stay up-to-date on their priorities.
  • Identify prospects and respond to research requests (Approximately 60% institutional giving and 40% individual prospects).
  • Use resource materials (including but not limited to in-house and on-line databases, reference texts, and directories) to identify, analyze and create in-depth profiles on individual, corporate, and foundation prospects.
  • Translate information into clear and concise profiles.
  • Schedule and facilitate strategy calls to discuss Institutional Giving prospects.
  • Help to arrange periodic briefings on fundraising opportunities and priorities.
  • Participate in training with other departments and with professional research organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned, including occasional special research projects

Experience and Skill Required:

  • Minimum of 3-4 years experience in prospect research and/or institutional giving.
  • A strong familiarity with the prospect pool of foundation and corporate donors.
  • Knowledge of and experience in using on-line databases (such as Lexis-Nexis, Foundation Center, and Guidestar) for research purposes.
  • Demonstrated experience in using Windows-based donor database program (such as Pledgemaker or Raiser's Edge).
  • Ability to use good judgment, take initiative, and make recommendations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, balance multiple assignments, and meet deadlines
  • General knowledge of office management techniques
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Effectively utilize office equipment to perform duties in an efficient manner
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues by building rapport, listening to their needs and being easy to approach.
