Description

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

For the last seven years, ZSL has worked in partnership with the Elephant Conservation Network (ECN) to carry out human-elephant conflict (HEC) research and conservation interventions in Thailand, including crop protection, community forest restoration, and improved wildlife protection, working with conservation area personnel at national and local level, community leaders, farmers, and other villagers.

ZSL is now recruiting a projects coordinator to help implement this conservation work while also developing the Thailand programme to add a tiger focus. Responsibilities include overseeing all project activities/staff, fundraising, public relations and strategy development. As the scale of the work and the size of the team increases, this job is expected to develop over time into the role of country manager.

The ideal candidate will have a strong personal commitment to conservation as well as excellent administrative, organisational, communication, and computer skills. The candidate should have a solid understanding of current priorities in biodiversity conservation in the region. This job would suit a Thai person with good spoken and written English language skills, a non-Thai person with competent Thai language skills, or someone willing and able to strengthen their Thai/English language skills on the job.

Salary will be £20,576 pa; ZSL will also provide one international return flight per year (from Thailand to UK or vice versa), full medical emergency evacuation cover, visa fees and 30 days holiday per annum. The successful candidate will be based full time in Thailand; with time spent in Bangkok and at the project field office in Kanchanaburi province. There will also be occasional visits to ZSL’s UK office.

To apply for this position please send your CV and covering Letter to the Human Resources Department at hr@zsl.org. The closing date for applications is the 26th October 2012. Interviews are expected to take place between 3rd to 9th November. The expected start date is the 15th December 2012 or as close to that date as possible.
