Project Volunteers

The Mgahinga Community Development Organisation (MCDO) are an organisation that is based at the foothills of the magnificant Virunga Volcanoes made famous by the magical Mountain Gorillas in the South-West region of Uganda.

We are an organisation that has several projects going on in and around the rural town of Kisoro that lies near to the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Our aim is to protect the environment and to help develop the local communities in a sustainable way for the future generations. 

Our work is very much community based in that we look for all types of volunteers whether they are Doctors or Vets to School Teachers or I.T Specialists to anyone who wants to make a difference in the most beautiful of African communities. 

 We are currently looking for self-funded volunteers that have something to offer a community and if you think you are that person then please get in contact and experience and get involved in a once in a lifetime opportunity. We are looking for volunteers to start as soon as possible in the following areas, we are also planning for 2010 and so if you are interested and want a life changing experience and to change peoples lives for the better and can offer your knowledge in any of the following areas then please get in contact.

 The current areas that are available to volunteers are as follows;

Education (Available in Kisoro, Uganda and Ruhengeri, Rwanda)

·        Teaching all parts of the curriculum for example teaching English at Primary and Secondary School level.

 ·        Teaching conservation at the already set up Wildlife Clubs at various schools.

 ·        Teaching Sports for example Football and Swimming.

 ·        Adult Education within the Mgahinga Community.

Animal Welfare (Available in Kisoro and Kampala, Uganda)

·        Veterinary work.

·        Rabies Vaccination Programme of street dogs.

·        Animal Husbandry of farm animals.

·        Animal Welfare Education within the schools and local community.

Conservation (Available in Kisoro)

·        We started a Behavioural studies on the Golden Monkeys of Mgahinga National Park in 2009 and are looking for field assisants to help collect data. This is an ongoing research programme all year around.

Orphanage Work (Available in Kisoro, Uganda and Ruhengeri, Rwanda)

·        General work from feeding to play time.

Health (Available in Kisoro)

·        Working in Kisoro local hospital, Doctors and Nurses are needed.   

We look to take on volunteers for no less than one month as we feel the longer you are there the more you have to offer and the more you will gain from your experience. Depending on the role you would like to take up, your itinerary will be set accordingly to suit the role and the volunteer.
