Description

In 2018, with funding from the US Department of State Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), TRAFFIC completed a pilot mentoring programme for junior wildlife investigators in four of South Africa’s nine provinces.  INL has recently provided funding for enhancement and extension of this programme.  The project will:

  • Provide mentoring in the four provinces that formed part of the pilot mentoring programme, and extend mentoring to junior wildlife investigators in the five provinces that were not part of the pilot mentoring programme;
  • Provide an enhanced mentorship experience for all mentees, including through increased contact time with mentors and access to a suite of support materials, and by providing mentors with a more comprehensive set of tools such as mentee evaluation forms, mentee development plan templates and mentee assessment forms;
  • Develop tailored mentorship models for each provincial conservation agency setting out a structure for continued mentoring of junior wildlife investigators beyond the life of the project, and which is not dependent on donor funding; and developing a business plan for The South African Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) that sets out a system for remote mentoring support to junior wildlife investigators in the provincial conservation agencies.

The successful candidate will manage a 2-year project focused on a mentoring programme for junior wildlife investigators in South Africa’s nine provincial conservation agencies, including the development of long-term mentorship models for these agencies, and the development of a business plan for remote mentoring support to junior wildlife investigators by the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF).  The executant will supervise the mentors and monitoring and evaluation expert and will work in close collaboration with officials at DEFF - Chief Directorate Enforcement, and the provincial conservation agencies.

Deadline: 23rd August 2020
