Project Procurement Contract Manager - Biomass

Building on its successful track record in the wind sector, the RES Group is expanding its activities to non-wind renewable power generation.  A dedicated team within RES UK and Ireland leads the RES Group's activities in the development of grid-connected biomass power and CHP projects.  Two key projects with a combined capacity of 250 MW and a projected capital investment of c £600m are the current focus of the team's activities.

RES is looking to recruit a Project Procurement Contract Manager to support the successful delivery of such projects.

The Procurement Contract Manager will be responsible for the procurement of the construction and operation and maintenance contracts for RES's biomass power and CHP projects, and managing the pre-construction engineering and due diligence activities required for the successful conclusion of the commercial contracting process. The Procurement Contract Manager will be based in Kings Langley or Gateshead and report to the Head of Biomass.

The job description below outlines the basic roles of the Procurement Contract Manager. The list is not definitive or limited and other requirements may come to light as the project moves forward.

The Project Procurement Contract Manager will:

  • manage and deliver the programme for all engineering and construction contracting for RES biomass projects
  • prepare tender documents for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract and operation and maintenance contract(s) for the biomass projects, managing input from internal and external resources as required
  • manage the tendering process for the selection and award of the EPC contractor and contract for the biomass projects
  • lead the negotiation of the EPC contract for the biomass projects, ensuring the contractual terms meet investor requirements
  • influence the negotiations for the procurement of major plant items within the EPC contract
  • prepare monthly progress reports on programme and budget
  • provide support to the project development and commercial teams through the due diligence process
  • manage the Project Engineering Manager ensuring engineering deliverables from the project closing team are met
  • ensure that all aspects of the project meets the required design safety compliance

 The role - essential

The Project Procurement Contract Manager will have:

  • Extensive relevant energy industry experience
  • direct experience of managing the award and delivery of an EPC contract for thermal plant of equivalent or relevant size and technology, preferably in the UK
  • direct experience of managing the construction of large thermal energy projects, preferably in the UK
  • understanding of investors' due diligence requirements
  • excellent appreciation of solid fuel combustion and materials handling, preferably biomass specific
  • experience managing multi-disciplinary teams
  • excellent project management and communication skills demonstrated by a track record in delivering to programme and budget
  • excellent negotiation skills and decision making capabilities
  • ability to manage competing demands to tight deadlines
  • have excellent team working skills and will be comfortable leading a team
  • excellent understanding of UK Health and Safety and Construction Design and Management regulations 

The role - desirable

  • experience working in a port environment
  • experience working in the renewable energy industry in the UK
  • chartership in the field of mechanical, civil or process engineering
