Description
BirdLife is implementing a 3 year project in the Lake Victoria basin funded by the MacArthur Foundation.  The purpose of this project is to strengthen governance structures for sustainable and equitable management of wetlands, improve understanding and appreciation of their values, and facilitate knowledge exchange to enhance wetland policies and their implementation in critical wetlands, including the Mara wetland, Lake Victoria Basin.
 
To support implementation of this project, BirdLife is looking for a motivated and passionate Project Officer to be based in Musoma, Tanzania.
 
The general duties of the Officer include but are not limited to:
Community mobilization and engagement:
- Mobilise local conservation groups at Mara bay and Masirori swamp and raise their awareness of this project;
- Support communities to develop community and conservation management plans for the identified sites;
- Support Local Conservation Groups to develop activity plans and provide technical support for implementation;
- Conduct the day-to-day project implementation activities at the sites;
Community capacity development
- Conduct organizational capacity assessment of the local conservation groups and identify their needs;
- Contribute to the  training of the  Local Conservation Groups in institutional management and conservation planning and actions;
- Support capacity building activities for Local Conservation Groups ;
Communication and information management:
- Collate baseline information and write report with regards to the project sites and groups;
- Write and submit monthly project reports;
- Maintain relationships with project partners and BirdLife networks;
- Produce news articles with regards to the project implementation, successes and learning from the sites;
- Carry out any other duties as required by line-manager;
 
The required qualifications and skills are:
• A good knowledge of natural resource/wetlands management and community development. Minimum requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in natural resource management, community development, sociology or other relevant field of study. 
• At least 2 years of demonstrable experience in natural resource management and/or community development.
• People person with demonstrable experience in building rapport with local communities.
• Ability to determine and set work priorities, organize activities, and meet deadlines.
• Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
• Good analytical skills
• Proven ability that the person is a self-starter capable of working with limited supervision
• Excellent computer skills
• Good communication skills in both English and Swahili
• Willingness to travel frequently to project sites and stay for extended period of time.  Travel to other countries in the region may be required.
 
Location: The position will be based in Musoma, Tanzania. Preference is therefore for residents of Tanzania and those who have permission to work in Tanzania. 
 
Duration: 1 year with possibility of extension 
 
Benefits: A gross salary of   between USD 4,800 – 6,000 per year which is subject to taxation as per Tanzania Labour Laws in line with experience and qualifications. Medical insurance will be provided.
