Description

BirdLife International is a global Partnership of conservation organisations that strives to conserve birds, their habitats and global biodiversity, working with people towards sustainability in the use of natural resources. The BirdLife Africa Partnership is a growing network of 23 national independent, supporter-based, grassroots, conservation-oriented NGOs with a combined total of more than 300 staff and 30,000 members. Partners are involved in research, conservation action, environmental education and sustainable development through a broad agenda focusing on birds, other fauna and flora, and socio-economic issues such as poverty alleviation.

The BirdLife International Africa Partnership requires a dynamic, self-starting individual to assist in the management of a project that will combine biodiversity conservation with education and sustainable development initiatives. Phase 2 of the Wildlife Clubs of Africa (WCA) programme will work in five countries (Botswana, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Ghana), involving more than 2,000 wildlife clubs with a combined membership of almost 150,000 children. It will implement educational activities in synergy with three ‘flyway conservation’ projects between Africa and Europe and it will mainstream wildlife club activities in the national curriculum for primary education in one country (Ghana) – producing a detailed model for other Partners to follow.

The position will be based within the BirdLife Africa Partnership Secretariat offices in Accra-Ghana, West Africa and is for a period of two years with a possibility of renewal depending on performance and availability of funding.

The successful candidate will be qualified in environmental education, confident, able to demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without supervision, have experience in project management and reporting (technical and financial), in working with local communities especially school clubs in either the environment and/or development fields, excellent IT skills, knowledge of biodiversity conservation, education, sustainable development and advocacy in Africa and possesses very strong interpersonal skills. He or she will also be required to take the lead in additional fundraising for the programme, as well as providing high-quality reports to the project’s donors.

Knowledge of the BirdLife Africa Partnership and bilinguality in English and French will be added advantages. The minimum qualifications for this post are a Master’s degree in an appropriate field with five years relevant working experience. Salary is negotiable based on experience but likely to be in the range of US$14,400 to US$18,000 per annum.

Applications should be sent to Mrs Edith Hongo at edith.onyango-hongo@birdlife.org before 3rd of February 2012. For further details click here.
