Description

GRID-Arendal is seeking a Project Officer to implement and develop new projects in the Africa region, and to contribute to the growth of programmes in the Division of Capacity Building and Assessment under the supervision of the division’s Head. The enthusiastic candidate will be working with a small, highly motivated international team.

The position is based at GRID-Arendal headquarters in Arendal, Norway.

 Main activities

  • Initiate, develop and implement CB&A projects focusing on capacity building for environmental information management and networking in Africa;
  • Carry out analyses on topical and emerging environmental issues relevant to Africa;
  • Support and coordinate the production of assessments and reports relevant to Africa;
  • Develop tools and methods for outreach and impact tracking of assessments, reports, graphics and other products;
  • Contribute to the development of new projects or programmes, i.e. writing proposals,  in collaboration with  the Coordinator of the Africa Programme 
  • Assist in the development, fund raising and management of new projects

Required qualifications

  • Master degree or higher qualification in environment-sciences;
  • Minimum 2 years international working experience in environmental information management or related fields:
  • Interest and working experience in environmental issues in Africa;
  • Interest and/or working experience in project management, donor liaison and proposal writing;
  • Experience in integrated environmental assessments;
  • Experience in working with the United Nations system, especially UNEP;
  • Experience with tools and technologies to facilitate the development of environmental-related information systems;
  • Communication skills, especially the in the use of visual communication;
  • Basic experience in project management;
  • Interest in fundraising, related skills and experience are an asset;
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team and independently;
  • Excellent language proficiency in English, in particular excellent writing and editing skills;

Personal qualifications

  • Interest in both organizational and technical solutions to improve access to environmental information;
  • Good networking ability and diplomatic skills;
  • Ability to work with/understand international cultures;
  • Ability to work with- and support a team;
  • Interest to work with national level partners, non-governmental organizations, the private sector and local communities;
  • Highly motivated and energetic personality.

Compensation:

GRID-Arendal’s salary system is linked to the Norwegian Government salary system. It is based on education and experience. Salaries are subject to Norwegian tax regulations. Insurance and personal benefits are provided in addition to salary. International staff receives additional benefits.
