Location: Beijing or Guangzhou – with extensive travel within PRC.

Term: Two year (renewable) contract with annual review and an initial 2-month probation period.

Background / general description:

TFT is a global non-profit membership organization that helps companies and communities deliver responsible products. Since 1999, TFTs main focus has been to provide solutions to the issue of deforestation and the empowerment of forest dependent communities. TFT has helped companies transform their supply chains and stop forest destruction. Through the same model, TFT has involved institutional donors and individuals looking to build capacity on the ground thus giving communities and local companies the tools to provide responsible products to world markets. Now with 90 employees and offices in 14 countries, TFT is working on a broad range of products using its supply chain expertise to identify and address social and environmental issues with a strong focus on natural resource management and traceability.

Responsibilities and tasks:

  1. Research and evaluate product supply chains (primary focus will be in the Pulp and Paper sector) against responsible sourcing procedures (e.g. legality and traceability systems) and international certification standards (e.g. Forest Stewardship Council – FSC).
  2. Review highly complex product supply chains  and undertake GAP assessments against the standards/sourcing requirements and compile findings into a concise report.
  3. Based on the findings of the review highlight risks and prepare logical and workable action plans towards addressing non compliances and risks in the supply chain.
  4. Provide guidance and support to businesses linked to the product supply chain with a view to reducing the risks in line with the action plan.
  5. Develop and implement management and training recommendations for companies working toward responsible production and product supply chain control
  6. Maintain a practical awareness of the challenges within the supply chains and be able to adapt the work plan as required to achieve the targets set.
  7. Monitor and update supplier information for TFT members/clients regarding key commitments made towards responsible sourcing procedures, work plans or agreements, etc.
  8. Support the preparation of workshops, seminars or other events to raise awareness and address supply chain concerns related to pulp and paper and other TFT product groups.
  9. Support TFT activities for other product groups and other countries, in particular, pulp and paper and palm oil.
  10. Liaise with local organizations and consultants as required to promote and achieve TFT principles.
  11. Draft regular reports and meeting records and maintain communications with TFT China, TFT’s head office in Switzerland, TFT clients and stakeholder as required.

Experience and qualifications:

  1. Bachelor degree or higher in value chain / supply chain management or natural resource management, forestry, agronomy or related field. An advanced degree would be an advantage.
  2. Ideally at least five years professional experience working with supply chains in either pulp and paper, forests or extractive industries. Preference on candidates that have proven business experience dealing with complex supply chain logistics and management with links to sustainability and legality requirements.
  3. Understand current issues relating to natural resources, both globally and within China.
  4. Demonstrated ability to understand technical, environmental and legal and social requirements linked to product supply chain.
  5. Proven experience working with companies to achieve international 3rd party certification preferred.
  6. Proficiency in English and Chinese (speaking, writing and reading).
  7. Working knowledge of MS Office.
  8. Ability to work independently and in a small team.
  9. Ability to prioritize and organize his or her own work schedule.

The China Project Officer (Supply Chain Traceability) will report to the Senior Project Officer.
