The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) has a growing portfolio of work in the field of climate risk management, resilience building, adaptation and development. IISD wishes to engage a Project Officer to support further expansion of the Institute's work in this area by implementing a diversity of initiatives as assigned.

Position Description:

The Project Officer shall participate in the research, management and communications associated with climate change adaptation projects and other activities undertaken within the Climate Change and Energy programme of IISD. Under the direction of the Director, Climate Change and Energy, or his delegate, the Project Officer will:

  • Carry out substantive research and project support related to the following topics as required:

    • Climate-resilient development in developed and developing countries.

    • Tools and methods for integrating adaptation to climate change into development projects, programmes and policies from the local to the international level.

    • Links between climate change, disasters and ecosystem management.

    • Emerging ideas, techniques and policy approached that could be used to foster adaptation efforts in developed and developing countries.

  • Organize meetings, work with partner organizations, and write project documents according to the needs of initiatives within the Climate Change and Energy programme.

  • Manage activities in cooperation with other IISD personnel, including but not limited to implementing specific projects, controlling budgets, maintaining relationships with funders, and supervising IISD or external consultants associated with these projects.

  • Support the Climate Change and Energy team's public engagement and outreach activities, such as the development of communication materials and web site content.

  • Follow on-going national and international climate change and development processes.

  • Assist with the maintenance of IISD's institutional presence in Geneva, including the maintenance of relationships within the government, non-governmental and private sectors.

  • Maintain contacts with project partners based throughout the world.

  • Identify and initiate new projects through IISD's project planning and review mechanism; develop proposals and raise funds for new project initiatives.

  • Represent IISD at national and international fora.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The Project Officer should possess the following qualifications:

  • Substantive knowledge related to climate change vulnerability, adaptation and international development policy and practice; familiarity with sustainable development theory and policy issues.

  • Masters Degree in the social sciences (e.g., political science, sociology, economics) or an interdisciplinary programme (e.g., natural resources management, environmental studies).

  • Minimum two years of relevant work experience.

  • Very strong writing, communication and networking skills.

  • Very strong organizational skills.

  • Systems thinking, creativity and drive balanced with considered judgment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

  • Availability to travel extensively.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English and French.

  • Experience in field research and participatory processes an asset.

This full-time position will be based in Geneva, Switzerland, at IISD's European office.
